So my baby has just been diagnosed as having a cows milk protein intolerance. I think it's mild as she is mainly breastfed and copes with me eating dairy but wasn't coping with having one bottle of formula a day (I was wanting to change her to formula but that's on hold). At the moment I'm starting to slowly wean her onto nutramigen by giving her 1oz of it to 4oz breastmilk once a day. My god, that stuff stinks :haha: I will be starting weaning over the next couple of months but I'm really confused now about what she can and can't have. If anyone has got any experience or advice they can share or maybe answer some of my questions I would be so grateful as I'm starting to feel a bit anxious about weaning.

- do I have to use nutramigen if putting milk in her food or can I use regular cows milk (cooked) or regular soya milk or something? I don't have a lot of breastmilk stored to add it to food.

- can she have cheese and yogurts if it's only a mild intolerance? Obviously, as with all food I give her at first I will do it gradually and watch for intolerance signs.

Anything else I should watch out for?

Thanks in advance xxx

Hi,

I'm not sure how much I can help as my baby is CMPA & cant have ANY dairy (or soya, wheat, or nuts!), so I don't know much about intolerences. Plus we're still figuring it all out ourselves - but I didnt want to read & run.

Milk wise - when we first started weaning I was using expressed breastmilk to mix in things like porridge, and then moved on to coconut milk (Koko or Tescos own). Other people use other alternatives like soya, oat or hemp milk.

If you are on Facebook I really recommend you look at some of the allergy groups on there as the people on there are really knowledgable and all going through similar stuff to you. I have found them much more helpful than most of the medical professionals we've seen! Try searching for 'CAN - for children with food allergies' and 'CMPA support for weaning'.

Hope that helps a tiny bit, and that others might be more helpful!

Thank you so much! That is very helpful! At what age can you give them coconut milk? She has absolutely refused nutramigen to the point where she was refusing all bottles - even when they only had breastmilk in them. After a week of battling with bottles and 12oz of my milk down the sink I've given up on it and will continue to give her my milk as long as possible but I'm worried about what she can have once I return to work when she's 10 months  xx

Its the same with alternative milks as cows milk - you can use it in food/cooking from 6 months, but not as a main drink until they are one. Our dietician said that at 1 year the best thing for him to have would be Alpro soya 1+ as it has the most nutrition - although we're awaiting test results to see if we can try it - I'm going to start giving him coconut milk as a drink in a couple of weeks to take in the day ready for when I go back to work. He only has one breastfeed in the day now anyway. I've been lucky to have a whole year off, and I've managed to breastfeed the whole time, I really didn't want him to have any of the hydrolized formulas as they sound disgusting! So I can't help you figure out how you might get it down your LO. But I know how stressful it is. You have got a good few months though to figure it all out, and hopefully you will be sorted by then :)

They smell disgusting too! I don't really blame her for not taking it as I wouldn't want to drink that either! I guess by ten months I might only need to send one or maybe two bottles with her so might manage that but didn't really fancy having to be relying on my milk for food too so good to know I can use other milks in her food. Do you know if you can get soya formula? I know you used to as that's what I was on as a baby and my mum said I took to it no bother! X

Not something I've heard of, but then again as we're avoiding soya it wouldn't of been something I'd of paid any attention to anyway. Again, the FB groups are great for this sort of thing, loads of people use the alternative formulas on there :)

Are you seeing a dietician or anyone?

The paediatrician said we would be referred but we haven't heard anything yet. Thanks again for all your help xxx

It took us 4.5 months to get to see the dietician :-/

Good luck with it all! :)

You can get soya formula, it's sold in most large supermarkets, but for various reasons it isn't recommended anymore. Xx

My kiddo has CMPI as well. As long as he reacts to dairy, I will use his formula to make his food (mash potatoes, sauces, cereal, etc.) We will continue to try some dairy here and there to see if he gets over the intolerance but, in all fairness, I'm not in a rush. We are avoiding the dairy products in general for the moment. As for soya, a lot of babies that have cmpi are also soya intolerant as the protein structure is similar, if I understood correctly. It's really one of those wait and see situations, at least for us it is. I'd just rather use his formula as that has extensively broken down protein so it is much better for him. Btw, the Aptamil Pepti has added lactose to make it taste better versus a regular extensively hydrolyzed formula so if your kiddo struggles with taking bottles, you might want to ask about the Pepti instead. (I'm not sure how else they compare so best to ask doc) :flower:
