hello can someone help me with this.

I want to premake some bottles for the baby for the night feeds.
Can I sterlise the bottles add the hot water and leave out to cool and add the forumla as and when I want to feed the baby?

The midwife said to me not to leave out premade bottles with formula, so how about leaving the water:wacko:

I thought I could just leave the water in the bottles then as and when I need them add the powder and either feed at room temperature or reheat?

You can do that.

We used to fill the 2-3 night time bottles with the water so then all we had to do is add the powder and shake.

I was told that the formula should be added to boiling water. However i no of people that do it that way.
This is what i do

My LO takes 7oz at the moment so i add 7 scoops to 4oz of boiling water. I then leave it to cool down a bit and then put it in the fridge. Then when she wants a feed i add 3oz of boiling water to the bottle and its the perfect temp for her.

Current guidelines advise that formula should be added to water that is above 70c. This is because formula powder is not sterile. Of course its up to you though!

Sorry to butt in :haha:
Ok, I'm kind of an 'oldie' at this as the last time I made up a baby bottle was in 2004, so my way of doing things may be outdated!
I have, however, asked my midwife about this for this time round and I have made my desicion based on both what she advised and my own initiative
*I am not recommending this to anyone*

I will be sterilising the bottles, boliling the kettle, and putting the boiled water into the bottles. I will then leave them to cool for 30mins, then add the correct amount of powder, shake, and put into the middle of the fridge (I feel like a rebel doing it this way, but that's my choice :angelnot:) I will also be using the microwave to warm them up (:ninja:)

I do know that the powder should be added to 'freshly boiled, cooled water' though, so I suppose I'm doing something 'right'! :muaha:

This has confused me too

13 years ago with my 1st son we'd make bottles up 40 mins after kettle boiled, store in fridge for up to 24 hours with either 20 secs in microwave or boiling water to take chill off them x the same was done with my now 11, 8 and 6 year old.

Now i have been informed i can no longer do this, Milk will be off after 2 hours wether stored in fridge or not. OK so that bit i get

Its the temp of water and timing after kettle boiled that would be ok for milk powder i didn't get?????

After speaking to the HV she said as long as the water had boiled it didn;t matter when the powder was put in x so i now have a milk tower (great super amazing invention) which i use all day and night, simply unscrew, tip in powder and shake :flower: I've found whatever the remp of the water the powder always mixes well with a good shake :flower:

yeh i was confused about this but i fill all my bottles n the morning and night wiv boiled water and then add the powder as and when i need it so they water is cooler. How can the powder not be sterile? as long as the waters boiled it doesnt matter

The NHS and The Food Standards Agency say that powder is not sterile. They cannot guarantee that there is no bacteria in the powder and thats why it needs to be added to water that is at least 70c. That said every single person I have met makes up their formula slightly differently and the guidelines seem to change periodically. I guess its just a personal choice and formula manufacturers covering themselves in case of litigation.

Those are the guidelines I followed when making bottles as they made the most sense. Sterile bottles, sterile water (boiled) but the powder itself is NOT sterile so to sterilise it you have to add it to hot (above 70C) water. I felt it was pointless following the other sterilisation processes if I didn't use sterile powder:shrug: but thats just me and everyone seems to have their own ways but i'm a rule follower

What we do for our baby is to pre boil a kettle of water and keep it in a sterilised water Jug to cool.
When we need to make baby Dylans feed, we boil a bit of water and add just enough to the baby bottle along with the powder to dissolve. Once it has dissolved we add the cooled pre boiled water which instantly cools down the feed. This way, the power has been sterilized by the hot water and then cooled by the sterilized cool water.
Does this make any sense?
Seems to be the only way i can think of to make sure everything is kept sterilised but not having to wait too long to make a feed.

I do pretty much as kelchashock. I sterilize a couple of spare baby bottles, boil the kettle and fill them with water and chill. When its feed time I add about 60ml of boiling water to dissolve the powder and kill any bugs then top up with the pre boiled chilled water to the required level. That way it remains sterile and is ready instantly.....no massive screaming fit from LO as it cools ;-) I was told in hosputal and by MW and HV NOT to pre make as the powder can breed salmonella after 2 hours!!

I'll probably get moaned at for this but I make all my bottles up in the morning and put them in the fridge after I've cooled them down.

I boil the kettle. Leave it to cool for 30 minutes add 6oz of water to a sterilised bottle and then add 6 scoops of powder. I leave on the side to cool to room temperature and then put them in the fridge untill 20 minutes before DD is due a feed (20 minute time period is heating bottle up. I do this by boiling the kettle then adding the boiled water to a jug and putting the bottle in the jug to heat).

The way I see it is if you use a cartoon and don't use it all you can store it in the fridge (in the carton) for 24 hours so surely milk in a STERILE bottle would be fine for 24 hours? I've always done it this way and DD is fine
