Went for my 34 weeks scan yesterday and all looked good. Twin 1 is 6lbs 12 and Twin 2 5lbs 6 ....so a pair of porkers! Then spoke to consultant who was concerned that they are both transverse and because of risk of prolapsed cord, and suggested I stay in hospital until they either come of their own free will, or for planned csec at 38 weeks. He explained all of this and then suddenly switched and said that we could wait until 37 week scan, see if they are still transverse and if so keep me in then. DH asked what are the chances of me making it to 37 weeks .........and then consultant said he needed to talk to senior colleague ..went out and came back to confirm we should wait til 37 weeks!

So I'm confused ....at one point it serious and then it's see you in 3 weeks. Was told that I needed to go in at any sign of birth - waters leaking, breaking etc. as the risk is life to the babies. Don't get me wrong I did not want to be in hospital just waiting for 3 weeks, but how can it be serious and then not, I though maybe they'd want to scan next week or something to check ....but nothing ......

Must admit didn't know much about prolapsed cord until googling it when I got home ....it is scary! But doesn't the consultant sound a bit of an idiot now ....may have got me overly worried for no reason and DH ahs put me under house arrest!

hon, i would strongly suggest you put yourself on bed rest- lie in you left as much as possible- and look up any and all labor signs so you're very aware of what you're watching for!

I've never heard of being hospitalized just because of position of the babies.

I asked my doc about prolapsed cord risks and he said he tells women with a breech presenting twin to lie down and call 911 if their water breaks. Not sure it is any riskier with transverse, but I can't imagine it is. As long as the cord isn't compressed all should be OK. Good luck. :)

Thanks ladies .....been googling and it appears in UK the policy is to take in singleton pregnancy women if baby is transverse at 37 weeks. So I guess his confusion lies with the fact that both twins are tranverse so with the planned induction at 38 weeks, this could be seen as comparable time.

The risk of prolapsed cord is increased up to 20% for transverse lie and multiple pregnancy increases risk too ........

Dh has put me on house arrest and onlly allowed out accompanied. And any sign of labour I need to go in for monitoring. bit scary, but chances of safe delivery if it does happen are high as long as in for csec quickly and we live very close to hospital
