Last week I was diagnosed with GD and saw the diabetes midwife who went through everything with me and then said they will definetly induce me, depending on how under control my blood sugars are it will either be at 38 weeks or on my due date. So today at 35 + 5 I went for what I thought was an appointment with the diabetes specialist midwife but when I got there it was just with the dietician. She then told me she wouldn't need to see me for another 2 weeks, I said but then I will be 37 + 5 and due to inducing me I would have thought that I would see you and the diabetic midwife sooner? The dietician then said she didn't realise I was so far along so clearly hadn't checked my notes! Then she still said I'd be fine to just see her in 2 weeks. So my question is, how many times do you see your diabetic midwife? When do they make a decision on when to induce?

Think how often you see them depends on how your blood sugars are. With how far along you are I'm surprised you're not being soon next week as well - are you able to phone your diabetic MW and ask her? (I have a contact number for mine) I've been seen at least fortnightly (and often weekly) since diagnosis by either the diabetic MW, consultant or a registrar, but I do have other pregnancy complications too. A decision on when to induce was made for me at 36w5d, and I have a further appt at 37w5d to finalise plans before being induced at 38w0d.

It's a consultant who makes the final decision on induction I think Hun. So far I have seen my diabetic nurse weekly. I see her again next week and then it's booked again for three weeks but ill probably be back sooner as I could be put on insulin.

I saw my consultant this week and he said generally it's done at 38 weeks with gd. Ask your midwife whether you'll get to see a consultant as my appointment go ; growth scan - diabetic nurse/dietician - consultant. All one after the other although between those I also see the diabetic team on their own. My next growth scan/consultant appointment is in 4 weeks time at 33 weeks and I hope to get my date booked then ( but I could be a section so might be a little different for me. I had a section with my second child too)

Xx

Thanks ladies thats exactly what I thought should happen. I'm guessing that somehow they have perhaps forgotten to book me in with the consultant / diabetic midwife again. I've got a number for the diabetic midwife so I will give her a call tomorrow and see what she says. I thought it abit strange that they only want me to see a dietician who wouldn't make those types of decisions. And the diabetic midwife had previously advised that as I was diagnosed so late they needed to make decisions fairly soon.
Thanks for the clarification, just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something before ringing them! :) x

I saw the GD nurse twice, once at 35 weeks then again at 37 weeks to get some metformin.

My midwife wanted me to have Sophie before 40+6. I had a c-section at 40+2 due to previous c-section. Not really anything to do with the GD.

GD babies can have extra difficulties breathing, so my diabetes nurse said. So they don't like you to have baby before 39 weeks.

Thanks, my GD nurse has advised it's usually standard at my hospital to induce at 38 weeks for GD babies but if you can control your blood sugar they may let me go to term but but would induce on my due date. She also said that if they get worse then I would need to be induced earlier than 38 weeks although I don't think that wild happen anyway. Going to give them a ring this morning and confirm!

are you on any meds hun?

I was put on 1000mg of metformin.. which was upped to 2000mg on Tuesday.. and im still getting some numbers above where they should be so i will probably be put on Insulin on Tuesday next week. xx

No meds yet although was only my first week monitoring my blood sugar and I had thought that we were going to discuss meds with yesterday x

they might be waiting until your next appointment to see what your numbers have been like. I had to test for 2 weeks so they could see any patterns etc with my numbers. Then i was put on the metormin, test for another week, metformin upped, test for another week and im back on Tuesday but have already been told ill be more than likely put on insulin xx

Just spoke to the diabetic midwife who said it had been booked wrong! So I'm now booked in to see her next week and at that time she will book me in for my induction x

thats fantastic hun :) Im glad youv managed to get it sorted out :D xx

Pleased you've managed to get it sorted!

Yeah so far I've only had 2 readings showing high, all the others I've managed to keep down to good levels, the dietician was pleased with them yesterday. I've not found it as hard as I thought, I think it's easier to stick to when there's a little baby to protect :)
