I have a connecta, and find it easy to put on myself for front carries. I do up the waist, hold Isaac to my chest and kind of sit him in it, then pull it up so the straps are over my shoulders. I wear it crossed and I reach one arm behind my back at the time, grab a strap and plug it in, whilst supporting him at the front with the other hand. I don't need to lengthen the straps either. It's probably be because Isaac's younger and lighter than Alex and Adam that it seems a lot easier.
In regard to the question about carriers, I wouldn't be without a stretchy wrap for the newborn stage, it's just so snuggly and supportive and yummy but a connecta or other ssc has much greater longevity. I used mine from 3 months.
