I had a EMCS with my last daughter, and will be having one again this time around. Last time I suffered from BAD constipation. I mean.... bad. It was AWFUL, and I really don't want to go through it again. I took stool softeners after I got home but it was too late I think. The damage had already been done.

Care to share some tips on how to prevent this from happening, and also what to do if it happens anyhow so that I can get super quick relief?

I'm not sure what you can do before but for after you could try;

Drinking plenty of water as the pain mess can cause constipation
Eat fibre
Eat roughage
Try using a stool under your feet when you're on the loo as the position can help
Stool softeners (but I know you said you tried that before)
Prune juice.
You can try massaging your stomach once you can have a bath as that can help and also cycling your legs, like you're on a bike can help with movement, but not very practical after a section!

I had it too for a few days, it's horrible. My bowels just made really weird gurgling noises too :-(

Xx

Hi there,

I can sympathise. Mine was so bad it lasted about 3 weeks with no bowel movement. I was on iron tablets because I lost a lot of blood plus strong painkillers. Both made things worse. I ma hoping to have a section again this time but I don't know what I am going to do about the constipation.

Sorry I am not much help but I just wanted to tell you I felt your pain :dohh:

Hey, I had ECS with my DS and I was given stool softener a every day twice a day from nurse while still in hospital along with jugs of prune juice!! no constipation!!!

Hope it helps-just ask for it if they don't offer it:hugs:

Thanks ladies! I think I will definitely be starting stool softeners BEFORE I go into the hospital this time around, and I think I will be checking into suppository laxatives just to be safe as well. I think you can get them as non stimulating, that way there are no cramps.

I will also start drinking prune juice in the last month of pregnancy!

argh you just reminded me of the awful constipation I had after my section, good idea with the stool softeners before a section, I will give that a try when I next have a bubba (or two!)

I took colase and ate a lot of fruit :thumbup:

I also had a supply of Preparation H pads. My poor butthole :haha:

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

OMG too funny!

Colase... I think I have heard of that actually. It's a stool softener, right? I'm going to look into that one. I want to be sure it's a good one.

It's not bad. It's not like a stimulant laxative that makes you feel like your guts are exploding. They gave it to me in the hospital :thumbup:

Yeeeah, definitely don't want to be sitting on the toilet with horrendous cramps after a section! I'll be in enough pain as it is! I am going to get the Colase, and some other options too just to be on the safe side!

Ooooohhhh yay you decided on a name! Love it!

YES!! :happydance:

So so so happy! I was finally able to settle on a name, and I feel good about it! It feels right to call her that, so I know it is the right choice!

you can take either colace or surfak once or twice a day. Stool softners take 2-4 days to be effective and essentially just add water to your bowel. You can also get some ducolax (little orange pills). They are the same medication that is available in the suppositories. These are usually effective in the same day. miralax is a powder that you drink daily that helps the colon absorb water. It is usually effective within 24 hours but needs to be taken daily until you are regular. You can also try the milk of magnesia once daily. It is a gentle non stimulant laxative.

The best thing is to get up as soon as you can and drink a ton of water. But the stool softners before surgery wouldn't hurt.

Thank you so much for this! I will stock up so I know I am prepared! :thumbup:

I live in Hickory, so I will be delivering at Frye Hospital. We had a great experience there last time with our section. I haven't delivered at the other hospital here, Catawba Valley Medical Center, but I have heard good things about them too since they rebuilt their birthing center.

Not sure where Hickory is (I'm Scottish by birth and been in USA for two yrs) glad you are going to a hospital you know and like--soooo important! The hospitals in uk don't come close to here- you are on a WARD!!!

Hickory is around 45 minutes North of Charlotte. I'm glad you are liking it here so far! I love NC. I love that I can go to the mountains if I want, or if I feel like going to the beach I can do that too! It is a beautiful state. I have heard pretty scary things about giving birth in the UK! I also heard that they get a really nice maternity leave, so that must be the plus side of it over there!

Ahhh ok, thats about 3-3.5 Hrs from me. I like NC but I do miss some things about home like being able to get buses and trains to pretty much anywhere and of course being able to walk round the shops, park etc. I have a son, named Benjamin and I gave birth to him here. It was a very different experience than what I expected in more ways than one! Not very private in the UK and been told its somewhat like a convary belt (sp?) but yea, maternity leave is up to a year I think or maybe 10 months-either way its something my friends love and have taken full advantage of!
I am glad I dont have that issue as I am a SAHM and I'm loving it! I have a degree in marketing but I am in no hurry to use it-kids are only young once and it goes so fast
