I had an early scan at 8 weeks and i didnt hear the heartbeat but the lady said baby was doing fine and everything looked alright but im curious as to why i didnt hear the heartbeat.

she probably just read the echo on the scan....if she did that she didnt need to play the echo.

My practitioner's office is never able to play the heartbeat on their regular ultrasound machine. Only if they are able to use their big, high-high techie one are they able to play it on there. Other than that, I have to wait till 14-16 weeks when they start using the doppler. It's normal, though. Not everyone has the equipment to play the sound. :)

Are you in the uk?

I've never heard a heartbeat at any of my scans, ( I had 9 last pregnancy)

Only time I've heard a heartbeat is with midwife appointments on a Doppler x

Agree with pp. In the UK heartbeats are not heard through ultrasound as standard. In fact we had a specialist ECG scan at 22 weeks with our Daughter and although we focused purely on the heart and it's development still didn't hear it. Just saw it in great detail.

Yeah im in the uk,oh right,i always thought u got to hear the heartbeat at every scan,me being silly then i guess.

I just saw the heart beating away at my scan yesterday at 8+1... didn't hear it either but the tech said it was perfect!

Hi zoeb, I'm a sonographer and we don't use the Doppler below 12 weeks as it uses too much power and studies show that it can be damaging to baby. As long as they saw it and did a trace (ie told you how many beats per minute) then all is fine xx

all she said was that the baby was fine, she never told me the bpm.

i know they dont always tell that but at next app ask how many they where at that time :)
if something isnt how you thought it is when you go, ask..they will be happy to answer ur questions....xx

remember we hire doctors, nurses and any technicians ....there working for us...just like even im a nurse, if not for patience i wouldnt be needed (hug)

I had an u/sound at 6 and 8 weeks and heard it at both (at different clinics)

Is this also true for home dopplers? I was going to start trying at 8 weeks but didn´t know it could be bad for baby. xx

She wouldn't have said it was fine if it wasn't as we aren't allowed to do that :) I'm sure all is good. Congrats! :) x

Hi Hun, home Doppler uses different technology and therefore less power than normal ultrasound. I think they can cause unnecessary stress too as it can b hard to find the heartbeat at times! That being said, I wouldn't use it every day xx

They shouldn't be doing this but every place is different or don't care about/listen to research. We don't do it at all. If there is any chance you could be harming someone's baby we don't take that chance unless medically necessary

One was at 6.5 weeks at the fertility specialist (internal) and one was at 8 weeks at a ultrasound clinic for spotting (abdominal)
Are u saying this is harmful to baby? So the u/s is fine but turning the sound on is not?

It's hard to explain. The ultrasound is ok in short spaces (if you scanned for 4 hours straight then it can be harmful)when you turn the sound on, it's not just a volume button, it sends a different type/stronger wave into you and therefore into baby. Using the Doppler won't harm baby straight away but there is research to say it can be harmful so that's why we don't do it. For example, you shouldn't have X-rays in early pregnancy either but if it was medically necessary they would do it. It's very hard to explain but that's why in Australia at our practice, we don't do it xx

I am in Australia.

I'm not here to start an argument. Just letting zoeb know why she might not have heard it as some practices work to the same policies as us that's all.
Enjoy your pregnancy x

I'm not arguing I'm just surprised I barely ever see other Australians on here! And you'd think if its a nation wide thing they'd be the same. Alot of things people say/do on here don't apply at all due to different country.
