D&C while awake!

I just went to doctors this morning because I miscarried at 7 weeks 2 weeks ago today and have had a lot of pain and cramps with no bleeding and ultrasound showed last Tuesday I was retaining blood and fluid and they said it was a clot. This morning in the office the doctor decided to preform a D&C then and there without any anesthetic! Thank God my husband was with me because the pain was horrible and I cried and screamed stop twice! He said he needed to do it to take out the clot. I felt him dilate me and then scrape my insides! It was horrible and emotionally I'm a mess right now. I have been crying on and off. I have cramps and pain. I have light bleeding with coffee ground discharge. Should I expect a period soon? For those of you I have talked to about the miscarriage you know my doctors have been horrible and kept telling me wrong hcg levels and not telling me the truth of my ultrasound. This has been horrible and I am emotionally starting to feel it. Thank you for your time and your support. I'd like to know what I should expect post D&C and just needed to vent.

I am actually sitting here with my mouth wide open. I cant believe they did that and no wonder you are in pain. What was the doctors reasons for doing it straight away?? Are you in the UK?

I've never once heard of anyone having a D&C while unsedated. Are you sure that's what he did?? Are you ok??? Were you sent home with any pain medication and/or antibiotics?

Where are you located???

Please, if that's indeed what happened to you don't ever go back to that doctor. It's not at all normal and things should NEVER happen the way you described.

If I were you I would be reporting them to whatever agency licenses the facility and doc and get to another doctor pronto to be sure they didn't do permanent damage to my uterus


(I had a D&C, not for miscarriage but because cysts caused my lining to build too thick and I needed to be "cleaned out" for lack of a better phrase. I was absolutely knocked completely out and was in no pain afterward save for very little cramping that was easily controlled with medication (sent home with prescription strength but didn't need it). I was also prescribed a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.)

That is wrong can't believe you had no anesethic..
I would defiantly be complaining and you should have told them you wanted sedating for the d&c..
So sorry your going through this, go to your gp cos your going to need checking as you didn't even get antibiotics??

Thank you all for your replies and support. He didn't tell me what he was about to do until it was over. He called the nurse in and said bring a dilator and he said well your going to feel cramps and then the pain came and it was horrible and he stuck a metal thing inside my husband said it was long and thank god my husband was there holding my hand because I was ready to punch this doctor! It was so pain and he began scraping. He said he got the rest out. He didn't say why he had to do it and I don't think he should've done it in the office. When he was done and I stopped crying he said are you okay? I said NO!!! I would've like to have been prepared for that. He said if I had told you what I was about to do it would of made it worse! I said no I would've tried to take something before I came in. He said he got the clot out after scraping for what seemed like forever! I am located in Massachusetts in the US. I am on some antibiotics due to a UTI that they originally said I didn't have and then a week later I went to pharmacy to get a prescription for ibuprofen 800 because the doctor said I will pass this and there was a prescription there for UTI antibiotics and I called the doctor and he said yes I did have a UTI at the hospital. It came back positive in urine and culture for staph infection an white blood cells so for over a week I had a UTI with no antibiotics. I hate these doctors and I am done with them!!! I am in pain and only have ibuprofen to take

I have the ibuprofen 800 too and it actually helped!!... well haven't got a d&c yet, but just also found out yesterday that I will most likely have to get one since I stil have leftover hCG... we both went through the same exact thing and I'm so sorry. this just makes me SICK TO MY STOMACH!!! what a d bag!!!! seriously hun, please do not go back to that doctor. he sounds horrible!! and you need a vacation, a beach trip, SOMETHING!! you need a break and you just need some time with you're husband right now. I have heard of them doing it without that, well on google I have!!!! not at the docs!! my doc was making it sound like they rush you off to the surgery and make sure you're good before and take care of you. this doctor seems like he doesn't give two shits about women that have had miscarriages!!! or you in that case. what an insensitive JERK!!! and for the hCG levels, that is so wrong. I am so so so sorry please let me know If you need anything

Doctors in the United States are not allowed to perform any procedure like that without your written consent and only after they described in detail what they were going to be doing to you.

Something is really REALLY off here.

Like I said, I really think you need to get to another doctor asap (like, right now) to be checked over and while there ask about the proper channels to report what happened. What happened to you is not normal by any means and he needs to be stopped from EVER doing this to someone else.


Please tell me he prepped you before he began? What did he say he was doing before he got started?? You can't just dilate a cervix in office at the drop of a hat, I'm terrified you may have serious and permanent damage due to what you're saying he did.


I hate to put it this way but what if what he did to you is going to cause you to not be able to carry another child someday? You really need to go and sort out what sort of damage was done and if there's anything you can do to help your body heal from such a horrific trauma - both physically and mentally.

Thank you annaaabanana. We decided we are never going back there again. I'm just waiting for them to call with my hcg levels. It was traumatizing. I was sobbing and yelling stop. It was horrible and he just kept going. Ibuprofen helped and then wearing off now and I'm cramping and in pain and hoping he didn't screw anything up in there. My friends who have miscarried said they were knocked out for there D&C. I am just so angry at him for doing that and then saying after well if I told you it would have made it worse. I said no I would've expected horrible pain!!! My husband was so mad at them. Emotionally now I'm really feeling it. This whole pregnancy they screwed up my hcg levels adding extra zero each time and then failing to tell me about the fluid they noticed on ultrasound and telling me all was perfect when it wasn't. I hope you feel better soon annaaabanana and that you don't have to have a D&C but if you do I hope for a fast recovery!

I am scared too that he did some damage and that it was permanent damage. Idk if he prepped me or not but he just started putting the dilator in and said you will feel cramps in a second and then all of a sudden cramps and horrible pain. It was traumatizing and I need to talk to them about what happened today because it was completely wrong!!!!

First off I am sorry you had to go through such a horrible experience. What an *#%!!! As a nurse, Drs are required by law to inform you of the risks with any medical procedure. I would ask for your medical records ASAP, which they must give you. In fact, I wouldn't even call, I would just go in and ask. I would also schedule with another OB/gyn immediately. Explain to them what happened, that your concerned there could be permanent damage, and that you want to see another dr to make sure everything looks ok. I am so modified about what happened to you. I would also report him. Or at least post your experience on the websites for dr reviews. I hope and pray that no damage was done.

Thank you! I am calling them tomorrow because tonight I noticed (sorry to e graphic) but a bluish grey not discharge but it's like stuck there. It's hard to explain what it is. I'm really scared I have some sort of infection from what he did or if I already had one and he just didn't tell me today. Thank you for your support!

It sounds like it could be leftover tissue. Don't worry about being graphic, most of us on here have dealt "with it all". Quite frankly, that guy sounds like a barbarian. Are u in any pain? Watch for a fever, unusual pelvic pain, or a foul odor. Those are definite signs of an infection. Definitely still call in the morning. Praying u can get some rest tonight. Thank you! I am hoping that's what it is. It's right at the opening and it kinda looks scab like. It won't come off or out. Really worries me. Hoping a doctor will be in today because right now were having a snow storm. I don't care if my and my husband have to walk there today. I need to be seen and he's so mad at this guy and doctors office he's going to demand I be seen! It was either there yesterday and the guy ignored it or he is the reason for it. I just woke up and right now no pain. Yesterday it was painful all day and felt so irritated. That was definitely a horrible traumatic experience. Thank you for your kind words, prayers and support! Did you sign a consent form for the procedure before hand?

If not.... then go to the police. In the UK you can't just do a procedure that ends a pregnancy (even a failing one) without the consent of the woman. I had to sign a consent form for the medical management. I can't imagine the law being any different in the states.

When I was bleeding heavily and passing clots from my miscarriage and admitted to A&E the doctor did a speculum examination. When the speculum was expanded it did cause cramping. He then went in to remove several clots from my vagina and I think more from my cervix (which was open) so he could see what was going on. I only gave verbal consent for this examination. I'm really hoping that this was what happened to you and it was just a case of bad communication because an actual D&C without written consent and proper anesthetic/sedation cannot be legal.

I agree what other ladies have said. You HAVE to report this guy. I will not use the term 'doctor' as he does not sound worthy of that title..!

This sounds pretty serious to me. He has not only caused you physical pain, but has left you emotionally drained and has risked your mental health due to the traumatising nature of how he conducted himself in an already delicate situation. performed an invasive surgical procedure not only without your knowledge, but without anaesthetic. I'm in disbelief here. Not only should he be struck off the medical register, but you are probably entitled to compensation of some kind.

I had a d&c yesterday and had to sign all kinds of paper
work stating it was explained as well as the risks etc. and that they had my consent. I was also put to sleep during it and given antibiotics to take. From my research everyone is put to sleep during it. I hope you'll find a new doctor, and definitely write reviews of this one so other women will see it and save themselves the heartache. I agree with others though that this doesn't seem entirely legal. Good luck to you and I'm so sorry for your loss.

I agree, a D&C without anasthetic is just crazy in this day and age. That said, I have read at least one story on here similar to yours.

Thank you all ladies for your support. It's insane that he thought it was ok. I had not consented verbally or in writing and my husband and I are going to a lawyer. He told the nurse to come in with dilator and then after dialating me and my crying and screaming stop my husband watched him take a double sided sharp instrument that's about 12 in long and he began scraping until the clot fell out. It was probably the worse experience ever!! I called them today asking why I was seeing some blue stuff on toilet paper when I wiped and they said he used silver nitrate when he was done. I am fed up with the place and how they've screwed up all my lab results and everything and now this!?!? This is bull!! Were getting a lawyer and going to try to get compensation for all the medical bills we have and if not at least put a stop to this guy!!! Thank you all for your support and kind words. I was and still am tramautized. It was so darn painful too and I felt so embarrassed after as I had laid there sobbing and yelling stop! He just continued doing it and never asked if I was okay. He's a jerk! He shouldn't be a doctor!!!!!

YES, YES, YES, GET A LAWYER ASAP!

This is assault, and illegal! When I had my D&C, like everyone else here, I had to sign a ton of papers acknowledging what was going to happen, exactly what was going to be done, and any risks associated with the procedure. And of COURSE I was sedated for the procedure! There is NO WAY what he did was legal.

In fact, I'd say what he did was downright cruel and unusual!

I'm never one of the first people on the bandwagon shouting "SUE! SUE! SUE!" but this is absolutely ridiculous, horrible, and terrifying.

I'm so sorry you've gone through this. I hope they revoke his medical license for what he did to you, and that you find a reputable doctor who will take good care of you in the future.
