I would think DON-tay is the traditional pronunciation just because you always hear Dante's Inferno from Divine Comedy pronounced that way. Which is written in Italian so I'm not sure why Italians would pronounce it DAN-tay?
My youngest daughter has a friend called Dante, pronounced DON-tay. She's a girl so I'm not sure if the pronunciation differs for different genders?? X
