DD (4) tested positive for both influenza A and influenza B today :(

Her fever hit 103.8 earlier today, and she is just miserable. The doctor said she has never seen a child with two flus before, that it's a first for her. We all got our flu shots (injection, not mist) in September and I asked the pediatrician if that was too early and maybe the protection had waned? She said nope, this is just plain bad luck. She said the flu shot just doesn't work for some kids, and this year DD is one of those kids. DD is too far into the illnesses for Tamiflu, as we had thought this was just a cold until the fever spiked so high today.

So frustrated that we all got the shot and DD caught not one but two flu viruses. How does that even happen?

Poor sweet girl. Immunizations aren't 100% fool proof unfortunately. :(
It is definitely possible. When I was younger I caught influenza B and swine flu. It was 2 weeks of hell.

I hope she feels better so soon. :hugs:

Supposedly for small children the mist is more effective than the shot (though this is different in the U.S. because apparently the brand of flu mist there is not very good), but no flu shot is 100% effective. I have gotten before despite having the jab, but it was milder than it would have been (my husband had it too and was way more miserable). It is possible that it's a little early, usually they aren't recommended until October for maximum effectiveness, but as it's nearly the end of the season, it's also likely the strains have mutated a bit since so it just means she's a bit unlucky. Hope she's feeling better.

Our Pediatrician told us they weren't even offering Flumist this flu season because it had performed so badly last year (less than 25% effective, I believe). They also specifically said we should get the shot as early as possible because we had a young baby at home (she was only 4 months at the time), so it was actually their suggestion that we got the shot at the end of September rather than waiting until later :dohh:

Funny enough, it skipped right over the baby. She got her first flu shot on Dec 24, and her second on Jan 24. Yesterday my 4 yo DD's flu test came back double positive, and yet the baby's flu test came back negative. The doctor said the shot must have worked for the baby, but not for my older DD. Going to take my son in for his flu test later this afternoon. He had some illness last week but his peak temp was 101.4, not like my daughter's 103.8
