There is a funny blog that I read a while back that said "dont be that guy -baby naming" or something like that.... and it was like don't be the guy that changes the spelling of a perfectly good name. You and your LO will FOREVER be correcting people on pronunciation and spelling. My name is Tara and since there is SARA and Farrah I'm constantly spelling my name but that's ok it's understandable but when it comes to unique spelled names it can actually change the pronunciation. For example my coworker naimed her son Raiden Now I don't know about you but I pronounce it Ray-den well apparently her son's name is Rye-den. UMMMM no it's not! RAID is Raid there is no other pronunciation for that. The spelling Aleksandr is very unique but complicated. I love the shortened ALEK in stead of Alex or Alec but you will forever be correcting people. Don't tell OH you are having second thoughts about the name. You can always tell him right before the birth and do what a PP said and just name your child on the day he is born.

really? that's quite strange
my name is Zara as is my friend, I also have friends called Tara, Sara and Cara (its fun when we all go out together lol)
Sara is the only one that's ever had issues as the common spelling is Sarah but the rest of us have never had an issue at all as Zara, Tara and Cara are never really spelt with extra letters

You want to hear the FUNNIEST thing!!! When I say my name.. TARA and this MUST be my New York accent coming through but people ALWAYS hear CAROLE!!! WTH!!! they don't even sound alike! I swear though it must be how I say my own name. No one gets my spelling wrong except for the first letter they just hear sara or zara or fara over Tara for some reason. But like I said the most confusion with my name is people thinking I said CAROLE! lol
Don't be confused I love my name there are just a lot of names that sound similar to mine so I understand if people don't hear me correctly over the phone. But If they read my name they 9 out of 10 pronounce it right. I hate when people pronounce it TAR-RAH. I am Ta-Ra. Lol

lol i get that too with our accent, we have the surname Sunney in our family and people always mishear it as Finley because of our accent, my other name always gets spelt with an I instead of an A
but my accent is really odd because I moved all over and pick stuff up really easily

It's the truth. If you name your kid Aleksandr, you and your son will spend the rest of your lives constantly having to correct people on the spelling of the name. I'm not telling you not to do it, but be prepared for some headaches.
Any interest in Alistair/Alastair? It's a Scottish variation of Alexander that I've always loved (sadly, can't ever use it as DH has a douchey brother named Alexander).
On Magnus as a middle name---do you just like the sound of it, or are you intentionally trying to name your kid "Alexander the Great"?
EDIT: My husband has corrected me that "Aleksandr" is the Russian variation of Alexander (see here). So maybe you can get away with it.

and I still find that article annoying and pathetic my son is so many of those don't in his name however his name of Jake is perfectly fine
to say anyone that:
jumbles up names
uses the name of a fictional character
uses a nickname
is stupid and/or doing there child a disservice needs to mind there own business, my sons name is all 3 of the above and I wouldn't change it for anything
why cant people just be polite and mind there own unless asked
i mean quote:
'Obviously, you can name your kid whatever you want, so really my point is this: if youre going give your kid a goofy name, have a damn good reason. Or at least a mediocre story'
my meaning, choice or story doesn't have to entertain or stand up to your standards as its a private thing that has nothing to do with you

I am not sure if you 100% got the point of the blog I don't think Jake is a name she would even joke about. I mean Ok because of twilight Jake has become SUPER popular of course but I would by no means say that it is a fictional character's name - she referred to Edward Cullen because i'm sure some people have named their child Edward (first) Cullen (middle) and that might seem a tad ridiculous years later when twilight is all but a distant memory. There were A TON of jakes prior to twilight and there will be a ton of Jakes born in the future!
She also doesn't say anything is wrong with using a nickname for a child. My aunt did make me promise before she passed that I wouldn't name my child a nickname - Jake is one of my fav boy names but she said NO NO Jacob is the name on birth certificate. Call him what you want but the proper name should be on birth certificate. But in all fairness my aunt's argument is because my cousin (her niece) named her first born Robbie. he is now 24 and a Seargent in the US ARMY and is now referred by his nickname ROBERT! lol Kinda odd that his nickname is not his legal name was all my aunt pointed out. Again I think Jake is acceptable as a full (not nickname) name but not everyone agrees. Sorry if you were offended by the blog but like the pp said it should be taken with the grain of salt because the blogger exaggerates everything for a few laughs.
One thing the blogger definitely has down and I will fight this point to my death. Don't ruin a perfectly spelled name with weird spellings... bc unless you have a VERY good grasp on how our language (and other languages) are annunciated then you could end up naiming your child something that will read entirely different to someone unfamiliar with how you intended your child's name to be pronunciated and that child will forever have to correct people.

Jake's name is nothing to do with twilight never even seen it
personally dislike Jacob as did my whole family sounds to posh London and we are classic northerners, I liked Jacobi but no one else did as the worried it would become Jack and there are already too many Jacks in our family
I did actually like Jayke (but im not sure if i seriously like it lol) but it would be pronounced different and once again sounds very southern
