Hi everyone, any help/advice appreciated from anyone with relux experience.

My baby has spit up quite alot of his feeds since the day he was born. He now spits up about half of he's feeds. He is currently on Aptamil first milk, 4-5oz ever 3 hours. Its reaslly starting to get me down. I feel like i can't even take baby out anywhere as he's sick almost every feed and it flys all over the place.

Ive had quite alot of contradicting advice from midwife/health visitor/doctor.

At first was told he'd grow out of it (which he hasn't as yet, he's 4 weeks old), then told to wind more, then wind less. Finally took him to the doctors on Thursday and was given infant Gaviscon. I'm not sure how long this usually takes to work but i havn't really seen much of a difference.

He doesn't seem to have any pain, its just the bringing feeds back up. I'm seriously considering changing his milk. Ive been looking into the SMA staydown and Hipp organic but i don't have a clue where to start. Have seen quite a few threads on here where Aptamil has made baby spit up quite alot but i don't want to change and then he gets constipated.

Has anyone had any joy in changing the milk? or trying anything else. Do some milks just not agree with some babies? I don't have a clue what i am doing wrong. Ive tried winding after 1-2oz, sitting him upright.

Thanks :flower:

hey my little one is the same and was bringing up almost everything he was having and as a result has gone down a percentile on his growth chart

ive changed him to hipp organic and he loves it.he still brings up ocassionally but no where near as much as before.im changing his bottles to see if that helps as well.

if he still isnt gaining weight in two weeks ill then take him to the doctor about it

How old is ur LO and what bottles do you use?
I use the MAM bottles with the number 1 teats. Have heard you have to go up a teat size with the SMA staydown milk but my LO seems fine with his normal teat. Just means he can't guzzle like he usually does.

Ive just made the change to SMA staydown and so far so good. No sick whatsoever. Fingers crossed ita not just a coincidence. My LO used to guzzle the Aptamil down and then used to bring most of it up when he was being winded.

Will carry on through the day and see if it is working. Have also been prescribed Gaviscon by the doctor but only used it for 2 days and can't see it being effective. Have stopped using it to try the SMA staydown.

his 8 weeks. i use the silly advent ones.ive just ordered some MAM ones today and his on the number 2 teats as of yesterday.

i did try cow and gate comfort but he hated the taste of it.

good luck hope the change works for your LO x

Look into C&G Carobel - it's a feed thickener that's natural ingredients so you can add as little or as much as your LO needs and it keeps it down in the tummy. That way you don't need to change milk. You can buy it over the counter at Pharmacies but yOull most likely need to get them to order it in. It's about £5 but will last a good few weeks. If it works your doc can prescribe it x

My dd had bad reflux from the instant she started on formula.

She began on Aptimal and I started to do some research into the various brands and eventually settled on SMA (normal Gold as it was then) with carobel added to it (it is just a food thickener) and she also had medication on prescription (ranitidine ?sp) but I only used this for the short term.

I tried infant gaviscon but it was making her constipated and I tried various stay down brands but tbh the normal SMA with the carobel was the easiest and worked for her.

This time when I need to go to formula I will be trying SMA from the start!

One other tip was to put a book under the end of her cot/crib etc and never have her lying fully flat - helped lots!

Hope this helps

Christie

exactly the same as Ava - I found Aptamil made her reflux worse! She's on SMA and carobel as Infant Gavison bungs her up so bad! The carobel is a real pain but keeps everything down!

Hey I've not been in the same situation (although LO has JUST started spitting up on Aptamil first so might be there soon) but just wanted to add that all of the professionals act as if switching milks is the worst thing you can do, but it really really isn't, I switched from SMA to aptamil comfort for my LO's colic and it was a completely lifesaver, so if you think switching to staydown will help, definitely go for it! I'd probably do the same if I didn't think my LO will be on Hungry Baby soon anyway!

Since starting on SMA staydown LO has only spit up once and it wasn't that much really either. I just hope this continues to work. If not i think ill give the carobel a try but hoping it won't come to that.

Did the carobel work straight away or did you have to wait a few days?

LO has gone back to throwing up every feed again :0( Cannot believe it. Why would it work for one days only.

Straightaway hun - from the first feed she took 6oz and no fussing, it continues to get thicker for up to 15 minutes so as they fill up its thicker intheir tummy keeping it down x

Personally I think SMA staydown is a bit heavy and their tummy can reject it more. It thickens in the tummy you see, whereas carbel thickens in the bottle then stops thickening once its in the tum x

We had the dame experience, changing him to Hipp and he is a thousand times better. My little chunk has even jumped from the 50th to the 75th percentile he is just thriving at the mo. TBH we were prescribed Gavi, Ranitidine and domperiode and all the meds made him worse with S&D and a sore tum as soon as I stopped all the meds and changed to Hipp at room temp he has been fine.

Hello :hugs::hugs:

I changed Isla from aptamil as i was having the same problem. She was being sick quite a lot and was very windy. The doctors said she had reflux but the gaviscon they gave her made her worse.
I changed her to cow and gate and there was a vast improvement. It took around 2 weeks but it was well worth the change.
I have also tried lots of different bottles with her too but the only ones that really seem to help are the dr browns. Isla wont have any other teat though apart from the mam ones so i use the dr browns with a mam teat lol.

:hugs:

Thank you for all the advice everyone. I seen a specialist on tuesday and turns out LO was just drinking to much. He has been cut down on his milk now and is doing great. He has gone from being sick nearly every feed to just twice since tuesday. I just hope it stays like that x
