Does anyone know of any dieting and workout plans for the breastfeeding mama? In the past I've had great success with things like weight watchers, but I'm positive that is not conducive to nursing. I also have a bum knee so can't run--can bike, but can't run. I really would like to get these last few baby pounds off, but I don't want to run the risk of drying up so need it to be foolproof!

Hi!

I actually had a similar thread a few weeks ago. I did not lose any weight after giving birth but I was afraid to go on a diet because of what it would do to my supply. Like you, I can't do any "impact" exercises. I have back issues. So basically my workouts are long brisk walks, and yoga. I just counted calories to 1800 per day and made sure I chose a well balanced diet.

In my first 2 weeks of my 1800 cal diet, I had no issues with supply at all. The next week my diet went out the window because I had a cold, and then I got a little lazy, but I am back on track now and just counting my calories. I really don't feel like spending money on big name diet plans because I am a cheapskate. lol
Still no supply issue by the way. I lost 7 lbs in 3 weeks, so I am happy with it. I think when you BF, they say don't lose more than 1-2 lb per week and your supply should be fine.

This probably isn't as helpful as I'd like it to be and you've probably read it before-- but it actually takes quite a strict calorie deficit/exercise overload for the majority of women to begin to dry up. If you were doing it pre-pregnancy, unless you were extremely sedentary during your pregnancy, I'd say you'd be safe to slowly pick it up again. I don't limit my calories at all, but I run anywhere between 40-110 miles/week and regularly get marathon-distance or longer runs in on the weekends and my supply hasn't suffered. You can always try it and ease off if you think you're noticing a difference.
