Differences: US vs UK

I just say I'm going shopping....at the store. No matter where I'm going. haha.

My husband is from the UK and I'm from Canada.

I call:
''boot'' a trunk
''shop'' a store
''food shopping'' groceries
''cot'' a crib
''nappies'' diapers
''dummy'' paci
''knackered'' tired
''crisps'' chips
''chips" fries
''sweets'' candies
''chemist'' drug store
''surgery'' clinic (a surgery here is a surgical procedure....)
''theater'' OR
''pictures'' movie theater
''getting pissed'' getting drunk
''knickers'' underwear
''jabs'' shots

... I am forgetting so many! Some things he says really annoys me... His family says ''me'' instead of my and that really gets under my skin

I noticed a lot of him and his family makes A LOT of grammar errors... Well they would be errors here anyway... Lots of spelling errors too.

Although I really enjoy English food, I wouldn't be a big fan of eating it regularly... Seems everything is a pie  I love our food... And how much cheaper a steak is compared to the UK!!! I much prefer the UK chocolates, they are soooo tasty. Way better than the crap we have over here! GALAXY=HEAVEN!!! :cloud9::kiss:

We don't have much ''roundabouts'' here, almost none. It's mainly traffic lights and stops signs! We are not big tea drinkers... Coffee is BEST ;) lol
Cars are much bigger here as well... Most people have big SUV's.

Also, I wouldn't feel very comfortable being pregnant in the UK (no offense...) It's very different here and doctors don't let anyone get over 3-5 days overdue because it's too dangerous. I think our OBGYN are more competent than midwives... (again, no offense) Here, it's mandatory to have a pap test done as soon as you are sexually active... in the UK it's 25, CRAZY!

I think teeth are maybe a bit more of a concern/priority here in the US/Canada... Everyone has braces.

That's all I can think of for now! xxxx

Not sure I agree lol I have not eaten a pie or any oven food for that matter since last year lol.
Also, I think I prefur UK midwife's as they are more home birth led too! x

I am with you on this! Birth is far too medicalised in the US and Canada. It's not an emergency, giving birth is natural. There is no need for bright lights and latex gloves :)

Also our food is definitely not all pie

not sure if its the UK or not but ive heard minced pie and differnt kind of meat pie...

also what the heck is "hen night" and "boxing day" im so lost on these different names for holidays....

i know what we call a back yard they call a garden and i think our garden is there vegie patch? i believe the sidewalk is also called something else

oh and vegies have different names too

^^ I don't know what boxing day is but a hen night for them is our bachelorette parties. :flower:

Boxing Day is the 26th December - I think traditionally it was either about giving Christmas Boxes to tradesmen who had given you good service during the year or sevants being given the day off to visit their families & being given boxes of gifts/food to take by their employers. These days its just another public holiday - usually when you have to visit the in-laws if you haven't had to go on Christmas day!!!

I think you call courgettes zucchini and aubergine eggplant??

Boxing day is the second day of christmas . They aren't grammar errors they are local accent :haha:

I thought Boxing day was when you box up your Christmas gifts you didn't like and take them back to the store?

I'd like to add a couple more..

Bobby (UK) - Police (US)
Lie In (UK) - Nap (US)

I don't think this is right. In the UK a lie in in staying in bed later than normal. When you have kids it's letting your OH get up with the kid(s) whilst you sleep.
A nap is going to sleep for an hour or so during the day time.

so weird how things can have the same meaning just differnt words in diiferent areas...

tegans mama- i just noticed T got her wheel chair!!!!!!! wow im just a little late on that, i know u were trying to get it for soooo long

Your right..

Holidays are a fun topic too! How do you think holidays differ in the US, Canada, & UK? Different traditions or meanings or anything?? :)

Is it right that in the US you don't have a big meal on Christmas day because you've had Thanksgiving?

Here in the US halloween is huge and pretty much every kid trick or treats. But in the UK(from what I've seen on here), they think trick or treating is glorified begging and I guess older kids are really rude and destructive for it. But here it's all about fun for little kids and I've never known someone NOT to go trick or treating as a kid.

That's all I can think of that is different for holidays. :haha:
