Chloe was born with a dimple near her anus. They checked it at hospital at birth and said it was fine.
Just had 6 week appointment and he wants her to go for a spinal scan to make sure it's not spinal bifida..He says he isn't overly concerned but I'm worrying now.
She's already got a scan coming up for her hip because I had clicky hips but now we have to go for another scan.
I'm just worried sick about her spine now

Does anyone else's baby have a dimple? X

My son has this. They did a scan after he was born to make sure everything was ok, and it was.

yup! they saw it at the hospital and he had a scan done. They said its a rare symptom, but they like to check anyway. Simon's was fine! They probably wiggled it a bit to see if was attached to the spine? Usually if its not, then ts no problem! just an extra cute bum dimple :)

My LO has a dimple too, at birth they checked it and they said she was fine. No one's said anything about it since.

My lo has a dimple too, it's the cutest thing!

No scan here, but her pediatrician is a very thorough doctor, so I have no doubt she is fine ;-)

I have a dimple above my bottom and although I don't like it personally, I have no problems from it :) Don't worry about it, your doctors just want to be cautious. Your son will be fine :)

My daughter has a sacral simple too, they checked it at the hospital (she was in NICU) and said not to worry about it :)
Stay off google about it!!

I think my daughter has this..... When you say dimple is it like a v shape? No one commented when she was born but at her 6 week check the dr commented she'd never seen anything like it, she didn't seem concerned though.

My sons both have a dimple (So does OH) and we asked about it when they were born and, the midwife/HV said it was fine

My baby has one too. Her doctor said if you can see the base of it its fine.

They check dimples with a sonar to make sure the baby does not have a tethered cord (linked to Spina Bifida Occulta). My eldest daughter had a tethered cord (her story is in my siggy). She only had a yellowish mark at her back at birth which disappeared afterwards. No real dimple or birthmark or hairtuft. They say most dimples in the back is fine (not tethered cord/spina bifida). And not all babies who have tethered cord will have a dimple or other mark on their back.

My 2nd daughter is 3 months old and I'm terrified that she too might have tethered cord, because she has a slightly crooked bum.

Good luck! I hope your baby is one of the majority whose dimples means nothing. Keep us posted?

Thank you and will do. I'll post back on this thread once we've had the scan.
I'll read your daughters story now as well x

Thomas has 3, all of which are closed and I was told it's fine. He's not had a scan though. Perhaps I should take him to my doctor.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I feel so much more calmer now I've read them all xx

Unfortunately it's too late to have a normal sonar scan for your Thomas. It's only indicated for babies under 6 months (preferable under 3 months). Thereafter, they do an MRI, which needs slight sedation until around age 5 or so. It won't harm to ask a doctor though, because 3 dimples could be a possible sign. But please don't stress too much, tethered cord is a very, very rare condition. If you're concerned at all, you can look out for symptoms. Things like weakness in his legs or ankles, pain in the back or legs, severe constipation, urinary symptoms like UTI's or kidney problems, decrease sensation in the feet, buttocks, etc. :flower:

My daughter has a sacral dimple, it's closed (you can see the base of it) but she has spina bifida occulta (tethered cord and missing sacrum) we were told it was fine at the hospital where she was born but she had to go to the children's hospital for a kidney ultrasound and the dr decided to take a look at her dimple, I'm glad he did!

My second daughter's spine had been checked whilst I was pregnant and all seemed fine but she had a hairy patch at the base of her spine at birth. She's had an reasons though and hers is fine.

Im sure your lo is fine but it's worth the dimple being checked at least then you know what you're dealing with.

Good luck xxx
