Dimple above bum - 6 week check

After reading this thread, I booked Lily in for an appointment, which is on Monday. I showed my hv first and like me, she said she wasn't particularly concerned (it's above her anus, you can see the base, she is moving well) but it'll be nice to have in checked out for peace of mind. I read up on it and quite a lot of babies have them and in most cases they mean nothing. Try not to worry and at least after next week, you'll know.

My 4 week old has a dimple with a tuft of hair in it. I asked our paediatrician at his 2 week check up (he was in NICU for congenital pneumonia for 5 days). She said that she had doe scans on it, and everything seemed fine. I don't know whether to worry now or not

Same here! I have one and my other half calls it an extra bum hole (lovely) despite me telling him it isnt actually a hole but my little girl has one too.. nobody has ever commented on any of her checks that it is anproblem

If she's done scans and they came back clear, nothing to worry about!

My DD was born with 2 sacral dimples. Her butt kind of looks like a lightning bolt. :haha: My midwife said it was fine at birth but I had her check it again at my 6 week appointment and she reiterated that it's fine, so we didn't do a scan.

My son has one and you can't see the base because it's too deep. It's actually so close to his anus that I didn't realize it was the same as the dimples people get the base of their backs.

I didn't ask my pediatrician about it until his six month appointment, and she said that there is a concern because It's very deep, But it is not spina bifida because it is so low. He never had a scan or anything done But I am wishing he would have.

Not read everyone's posts but I noticed lo has one earlier this week. How I went 7nonths without seeing it I don't know! Google is the devil sometimes! I showed my hv at her check up this week and she isn't concerned. It's reassuring to see so many others with experience of it xx

My son has one and got sent for scans as they couldn't see the base - all was fine, he is very advanced movement wise. Apparently it is quite common! X

DD2 has a dimple and at our 8 week check up im gonna chase the scan and referral. its not a deep deep one and you can see the base of it but i want it checked anyways.

Thomas has 3 sacral dimples. He's never been scanned but has had them checked by doctor who have said they are closed.

I didn't realize dimples could be something to worry about! My Mom and I have two and so does my LO. I figured it was a genetic trait! LO's are not very deep and they've gotten a little more noticeable as she's gotten bigger. Should I be worried?

Yep sorry i forgot to update. She had it checked properly and its 100% fine. Thank you for asking xx

I'm also from SA, and sorry to say, but I don't trust the pediatricians here with this condition at all. My experience was that none of them really knows it, or much about it. And scans aren't 100% unfortunately. Though, chances are very good that if it shows no problem, there more than likely is no problem. If it was anything else other than a tuft of hair, I would've trusted the diagnoses and forgot about it. But a tuft of hair could be a very clear sign of tethered cord, especially split-cord malformation. It depends on how the tuft of hair looks like. If it's dark, coarse and long hair, I'd go to a specialist in this (neurosurgeon, NOT neurologist) and ask them to check it out/do an MRI. I hope I'm not scaring you, but it's cost my daughter her continence, because a number of pediatricians, urologists, neurologists and even a neurosurgeon didn't know this condition here in SA. Our population is just so small and the condition is so rare, they just don't see it often enough to have much experience in it. :nope:

If they're not deep and you can see they're closed they are more than likely fine :) but I would probably have her checked over the next time you visit your doctor/health visitor.
