Do doctors generally try Clomid before scheduling an HSG?

Hey ladies,

I'm just curious if doctors try Clomid before scheduling an HSG, or if it is the other way around.

I have my specialist appointment in December, and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. My family doctor told me he will likely do an HSG, however I'm reading so many posts on this forum saying they tried Clomid first.

An HSG terrifies me, so I'd be really happy to hear that I can try something else before having to go through that.

Edit: Been TTC for 24 months, cycles lasting 4-7 months

My understanding is that generally they will order the HSG first, that's certainly what happened with me. There's no point in giving you clomid to help you ovulate if your tubes are blocked, which is why the HSG in usually done first.

Don't stress about it, an HSG isn't fun but it's not that bad either. I found it a little more uncomfortable than a pap smear, there's some cramping as the dye goes in but it only lasts a minute or two. And if you have a minor blockage sometimes the HSG can clear it.

Good luck!

My dr tried clomid first because I knew I wasn't ovulating (from charting temps) so we had to get me ovulating. Then after a couple months and no luck getting a bfp she wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else preventing us from getting pregnant. I had the hsg a couple weeks ago and everything was fine so now I'm just staying with clomid and waiting to see what happens for awhile. Oh and another reason she wanted to do the hsg was because I have early spotting starting around 8dpo, but all progesterone tests are fine so she wanted to check for polyps. All tests so far and hsg are fine, but still spotting

My doctor did a HSG first, and really, I'm glad he did, because I would have been over stimulating my ovaries for nothing as the HSG showed both my tubes blocked.

I've always been apprehensive about medical procedures, and I'm generally overcoming this. I can tell you that its not that bad at all, its true some women do have pain, but many don't, me included (and I have blocked tubes which should cause pain), that is why you take a pain killer before the procedure, just in case. Its over really quick, like in a question of minutes, and it also helps many women to get a BFP! So most certainly embrace the procedure, it can only help and tell you more about your body XXX

Thanks for the input ladies! <3

It's really not the pain I'm worried about... Just the idea of what they'll be doing freaks me out. I get horrible anxiety, enough to have a panic attack and pass out. If/when my OB/GYN decides it's time for an HSG, I'm really going to need to get prescribed something to help calm my brain down as the procedure is happening.

I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks too, so I do understand, I am better now but still get them occasionally. I would recommend taking a mild tranquillizer before the procedure (if you doctor okays this), and when its the time focus on your breathing. Anxiety pulls us out of the moment to horrible thoughts of "what if" or "I can'd do this". If we learn to let this thoughts go without "obeying" them, and go back to our breath, it passes, good luck XXXX

I had an HSG first. I took 1000mg of ibuprofen beforehand and it was nothing :)
