my little summer is four months today and has been salivating literally at solid food, she opens her mouth when we spoon yoghurt or baby custard in and its helped her bowels too as she was constipated due to the formula but she has had a major growth spurt and is drinking more but wanting more than formila, she enjoys new tastes like fruit, vege and custard. I mean when i was little i was on solids and cows milk by eight months for both and my mother was eating solids at 2months, i mean its a bit OTT now with having to wait until 6 months when my girl is obviously thriving as the pediatrician says and she also said that if she is really interested and still hungry after formula then its fine to feed her one food each week alongside her normal amount of milk as babies lose weight when they switch to solids as they tend to just get fruit, vege and processed yogurt but summer rose is fine with her milk now she just enjoys her custard and apple mix each day and next week we will try stewed apple, last week it was orange but it was a bit strong although she is much better pooping wise

My son is about to turn 3 months & he is the same way! I will be trying him on rice cereal very soon because there is nooo way he will last until 6 months!

Eddy jus about made it to the recommended 17weeks minimum. The guidelines have either changed or about to be changed in the UK to state that 17 weeks as a minimum, 6 months as an ideal. Both Earl and Eddy were stealing food off our plates by 17 weeks so it seemed pretty obvious that they needed the solids. We're currently doing a good breakfast of porridge or rice with fruit, and slowly introducing something at teatime if he needs it. Don't think he'll need it tonight but yesterday he was famished!

It's not always the case that babies lose weight when they start solids. It's true that they contain less nutrients than the milk, and take more energy to digest so the weight gain slows, and it usually coincides with a jump in the amount of activity the baby is doing so their gain slows. The food should be in addition to their normal milk intake.

My Son is 4months yesterday (18weeks on wednesday) and i'm not planning on starting solids just yet. were hoping to hold out till at least 5months, hes reflux so my aim for the mo is making sure he takes his milk as sometimes it can be a nightmare.

I think salivating or getting excited around food is normal behavour for a baby who is more aware of there suroundings, I dont really think that it means its a sign for solids unless it is occompanied by the other signs of sitting up unaided etc. I started my daughter on solids almost 5 months because she had been sitting up unaided and was able to guide food to her mouth. But I do wish I waited till 6 months. I didnt have any bad issues starting early or anything but now she is 7 months old I realise she didnt realy need it. her milk was enough. Also we skipped the rice as my daughter is a big girl she didnt need the rice which would just have kept her tummy full i just introduced vegs to start with and fruits :) xx

i have never herd with my other two babies had to be sitting up unaided before solids. must have just started telling people that. i cant rememeber when my Los sat up unaided. ds is 4months he tries to lift his head and torso up when lying down but doesnt get very far.

things change everyday with guidlines etc. i assume its since the rules changed to weaning at 6months. I wouldnt know my daughter is my first. obvously if babys are sitting unaided its much safer than if there still floppy i assume thats why..
