Hi everyone! I had an emergency c section with my son 2 years ago because he was too big to come naturally (after 23 hours labour). basically they think this time my little girl will also be big so may end up having a planned c section (got another growth scan at 34 weeks so will know more then) :nope:.

My question is - if i do have to have a planned c section do they tend to wait until your 40 weeks or book it in earlier???

thanks

I had a planned section (booked at 36 weeks) due to my baby being too big to come naturally and laying transverse. I had my section at 38+5

I did have gestational diabetes though and even with that the consultant said he wanted me as close to 40 weeks as i could get! x

hi iam no medic but as i understand it, if its a non emergency elcs then they usually do it at 39wks but with more complicated problems then they can do the planned section at around 36-37wks....unless in an emergency as soon as.both mine were 39+3 and my first was classed as an emergency (even though it wasnt) hope this helps :winkwink:

It might depend on where you live. Where I am at the rules were that they could schedule it anywhere there mother preferred between 38-40 weeks. That recently changed now- you can't schedule before 39 weeks unless there is a serious reason to do so. My first c-section was the day after my due date, the next two were at 38 weeks, then this last baby I had to schedule at 39 weeks, but I ended up going into labor before I even had my pre-op appointment. I am wondering if they will still make me wait until the 39 week mark to schedule the c-section with this baby.

I was induced for my first two days before my due date. She was too big and in distress so had to have an emerg cs. With my second and third they were born at 39 weeks exactly. My ob wouldn't do it any earlier.

Im gonna have a scheduled section at 37 weeks.

after 2 emergency-sections and complications on the second one, I am having a planned c-section from 37 weeks onwards, no date set yet. My consultant wants to avoid me going into labour .

i had my c section at 39 weeks because of my spd and small pelvis, the doctors thought baby was going to be a bit on the big side.

I think it depends on the hospital/area you live in! I'll have my ELCS at 39weeks! :flower:

Mine was at 39 weeks to avoid labour happening first. My consultant old me there is no difference between babies born at 39 weeks than at 40, whereas any earlier, eg 38 the lungs aren't as fully developed so it shouldn't be any earlier than 39 weeks really. Unless for other reasons of course.

I am scheduled for my section at 38+6, this is because the baby is breech. The doctor did not say why that day just chose it. I am not convinced that he thought I would be 39 on that day but hey, I am not sure what difference 24 hours would make.

Good luck and I am sure all will be fine, they know what they are doing. Take care :)

i had my elective section with DS2... at 39+5. I didnt have any complications, i opted for section, after my DS1 was born via Emergency section.

Im told i will need to have a section again this time round and when i told the midwife that i had my son at 39+5, she said Ooooo it will be alot earlier than that!... how earlier i dont know

They do tend to be. DD was breech so I was told I'd have a C-sec at 39w, so there was less chance of me going into labour as C-sec was the safest way to delivery her.

Originally, we had planned a c-section for about 38/39wks ('normal' pregnancy), then it was 37/38wks, due to possible pre-eclampsia, then emergency at 36wks (severe pre-eclampsia); but before all the high blood pressure (at 32wks), my ob/gyn was happy to consider at 38/39wks, so I would hope that you could request for around 38-39wks, if all else is okay. Otherwise, be guided by the midwife and other medical professionals, as another poster put it, they know what they are doing!

best wishes

Mine will be around 39 weeks. The hospital requires proof of lung maturity before 39wks, even if its just a day or two.

It varies hospital to hospital, we ran into this issue when I had my daughter, they wanted me to come in at 38+5 to begin my induction and the hospital refused to schedule it before 39 because it wasn't emergent and no lung test had been done. They required I waited the two days.

My ob done sections (planned ones) once a week. so it was either 38+6 or 39+6 for me and with a breech baby waiting till 1day before my due date was too risky. so we opted for 8days before.

I think it would only be a very very small amount of babies with probs with lungs or breathing. i herd that c section babies suffer probs with breathing but i think its nonsence my ds was fine. but one of my vaginal overdue babies had probs and ive known others thats had the same.

its just different for everyone no point in worrying. i was worried being told that when i needed have to.

Hey hun i had a similer situation to you with my EMC but only 6months ago! I am planning my c section to happen @ 40weeks because i hate the idea of forcing the baby out early if not needed as it was due to failed progression and ruptured membranes so no propper emergency if thats the case this time id like to attempted labour but instead of getting induced if babys late have a section xx
