Do you reckon it's safe to take Valerian?

I'm 4dpo. The next two couple of days will be quite stressful for me, and I'm seriously considering of taking a couple of Valerian pills. They're supposed to be the mildest of stuff.

You know anything about it? What would you do?

What brand? Many are saying Kalms is homeopathic, but I don't recall it being so. Valerian can damage your liver with high doses, and cause cardiac problems on withdrawal, so personally I wouldn't just in case.

Thanks for this. I've very rarely taken sleeping/calming aids, and they were all herbal-based. This will be the first time I'd actually take one, so definitely no abuse or high dosage here.

This is what I've found in wikipedia:

The very limited animal and human data do not allow a conclusion as to the safety of valerian during pregnancy. Moreover, as a natural, unregulated product, the concentration, contents, and presence of contaminants in valerian preparations cannot be easily determined. Because of this uncertainty and the potential for cytotoxicity in the fetus and hepatotoxicity in the mother, the product should be avoided during pregnancy. Other authors have arrived at the same conclusion [17][18]. The risk to a fetus from short-term or inadvertent use during any part of gestation, however, is probably low, if it exists at all.

What does the underlined phrase come to mean?

That there theoretically is a very low risk of anything happening to baby if you are pregnancy and use it short term. They note that there is very little actual data, and so really you just have to decide whether to take a chance or not on your own.

Sorry hun. Is there anything else that will help? I never found them that good personally.

Thanks, hon. :flower:

I actually feel far less stressed than I thought I'd be, so for now it's not necessary. I'll see how that goes during the day.
