Doc said circumcision may not be covered by insurance

Here it's about $300 and not covered. We didn't do it to DS - not because of the money, I felt quite strongly against it. Our doctor said as long as you teach them to properly clean it, there isn't any health risk. (Teaching them about cleaning happens later, you're not meant to pull back the foreskin until it moves on its own).

I live in the US, and have ODS insurance. I was curious after reading through this thread, so I looked it up. My insurance will cover it 100% if it is done within the first 3 months. Just thought everyone shouldn't automatically rule it out because people on here say something.

I'm having a girl so it doesn't apply but I was curious so I checked and my insurance (Aetna) will also cover it in the first 3 months.

It's good to know that some insurances do cover it if done within a specified time. Since we're choosing not to have it done, I never looked to see if my insurance would cover it but it might as everything else is completely covered. And if it didn't our hospital doesn't charge too much to have it done if we were to have it done.

I think that if parents are expecting a boy they should check to see if their insurance covers it and thoroughly research the pros and cons about circumcision if there's no religious reasons for them to do so. The foreskin is there for a reason, after all.

Honestly I dont care if youre for circumcision or against it... what anyone chooses to do or not do with their sons penis is purely up to them ... but this article from the AAP clearly states that they believe insurance should cover it which is what the OP was talking about not whether you think it should be covered/ done or why .

We had to pay $120 out of pocket. Insurance covered the rest. It's $400 here.

True, but if her insurance won't cover it, there's really nothing anyone can do about it.
The OP will just have to pay out of pocket for the procedure, which shouldn't be a big deal if that's what they want to do.

Of course it's up to the parents, but since it is a cosmetic surgery (and insurance doesn't cover cosmetic surgery unless it's medically necessary) that's the reason most insurances don't cover it. There's really nothing anyone can do about that.

Well hopefully that means they're trying to discourage it!

My twins Circ was not covered... I paid 500 out of pocket for each. Never knew that it was considered cosmetic until I got the bill and tried to fight the insurance company to cover it. It's definitely something you'll want to clarify with the insurance before hand!

You obviously didnt read the article or any of the attached links ...after conducting many studues the AAP no longer thinks it should be considered cosmetic. They have found clear evidence that there are medical reasons to have it done and are leaving it up to the parents to decide if those reasons are good enough for them ... for some they wont be and thats fine but my point in my original post is that the AAP believes it should be covered by insurance . I never said it would change the fact that her insurance doesnt cover it .

How strange. The rest of the world doesn't think there are enough medical reasons to have it done at birth - and they're all just fine!

Since we are posting links, can I add this really fabulous 4 part series by a scientist (though a biased one for sure as this is her personal blog) that describes in great detail all the research that has been done on the benefits of circumcision. After reading this series, more so than ever before, I really feel very comfortable with my decision not to circumcise if we have a son this time.

This is part 1: the science stuff starts about half way down the page and continues for a few parts before she gets into the religious aspects. She directly addresses each and every point made by AAP.

What's this? People have strong opinions on circumcision? I never knew. This thread is getting to be a bit off track.

I've read that article before, and many by the AAP. Which is the only international organization that even remotely suggests that circumcision is beneficial. But just because one organization says something should be covered by insurance, doesn't mean the insurance companies agree. Plenty of other international organizations have found even more evidence that there are medical reasons not to have it done.

Maybe the insurance companies see that there are not enough sufficient medical reasons to have it done and are trying to make that clear by not covering it and have the parents pay out of pocket if they want it done? There are numerous websites that clearly explain the important role and function of the foreskin. Maybe the insurance companies have done their research and deemed it unnecessary and cosmetic for that reason? And if that's the case, then it's no surprise that they're asking so much for the procedure to be done.

Anyway, I won't go citing facts since that's not what this is about. I was just saying that there's really nothing that can be done about this. If insurance won't cover it, it won't cover it for a reason.

:dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh: Is all I can contribute to this thread. That and there are lots of things not covered by insurance that ARE medically necessary for all those that argue its because its not medically necessary and that is why it is not covered. Which btw.. What people thought about circumcision was never asked, it was simply stating that OP's insurance did not cover it. :dohh::dohh::dohh::dohh: these threads should be perma banned it always causes damage and drama.
