Does anyone agree with me that the HIP grant is all wrong?

it is studpid saying I don't need it and Im glad its being cut but Ill take it! Thats what I feel contributes to the debt of the country

Its not really stupid? so if 1% of the population decides to take the moral high ground & not take what theyre being offered for free, that will sort out that nations debt??? unfortunately it doesnt work like that hon!!!

The nations debt is helped a lot less by people on benefits who dont need to be!! not by us hard workers who for once in our lives are being offered ( & choose to take ) something for free!!!!!!!!

I mean why do you want it cut if you plan on claiming it and don't need it? That is stupid its not the moral highway to be greatful and appreciate what you are getting back from the gov.

Edit: I said contributes not causes

If that's aimed at me, did I EVER say I didn't need it? :growlmad:

Me & OH might work but we are far from rich, we need help too but we don't get it and so we struggle to make ends meet. I hate paying as much tax as I do, but I have too. So when a grant that is offered to every pregnant woman is available, yes I am going to take it. Because I have as much right as u, or any other person that works or are on benefits to claim it. Maybe even more so because that is my tax money after all, but I don't look at it like that.

The debt of the country has NOTHING to do with the HIP grant or ppl ''like me'' claiming it!!! It's originally because of the banks, the recession and the stupid spending the government did.

I think the HIP is a not needed really, but whilst it's going of course I'm going to take it. But I won't be sad to see it go once it is cut.

Its not a case of "wanting it cut" its a matter ( & im sure most will agree ) that something HAS to be cut to sort out the countrys debt & this is something that would be missed a lot less than other benefits etc that the country receive!! (none of which i receive may i add)

Id rather that were cut that income tax go up yet again for example!!!!!!!

Not read all replies. I never got it because it didn't exist when I was pregnant. And tbh I'm glad it's being scrapped. Most ridiculous waste of money. I would bet that less than 10% of the people that get it actually spend the money on the purpose for which it's intended. And before you all jump on me, I'm a single mum on benefits atm so I'm not being snobby or anything

its aimed at those who said I DONT NEED IT!

They probably wont need child benefit either but i bet they will take that as well.
Does anyone actually beleive they would pay less tax if there wasnt a benefits system ?
The goverment would just use the money for more free lunches.

yeah there are lots of things that could be cut but I can see the benifits of the grant, and im sure those who also applied will to!

Your lucky you dont need to recieve benifits, were not all that lucky

the question is how wealthy do you need to be before you say no to free money.

I wouldn't say I was lucky... I might have to move within a couple of months of having my LO as we're not sure how we'll afford our rent and outgoings on only OH's wage and my maternity allowance  Plus I may have to go back to work when LO is 9 months old, when I'd rather be a SAHM until LO is in free nursery.

Why do people think it is "free money"?? All working people, (including people who do not have children), who pay their taxes are paying for this grant, therefore it is not "free". I have already put my point across earlier in the thread and do not wish to cause arguments, but I do have a question -

Wouldn't people rather see the money saved from scrapping this grant put towards their childs future - health services, education, a more stable country etc?? I personally would :flow:

its a grant, with all grants there is going to be controversy, they are going to be cutting grants for most things like uni students, there will always be the argument of 'if you have kids/chose to do something then you should pay for it and shouldn't get a grant because there are benefits for those that need help' but there is also the stance that actually the benefit system favors those that are unemployed and a lot of benefits are based on other benefits i.e you can't claim for ssmg if you're not getting certain benefits, because its a grant and its financial aid its not free money, its because pregnancy/childbirth are expensive and in we get help the same way farmers get subsidies

If I didn't need it, I wouldn't get it. At the end of the day, people have had to work to give you the money, it's not free. I wouldn't feel right taking it knowing I don't even need it, I'd rather it went back into the pot for someone or something that needs it

Im not going to be a sahm I have to go to uni so I can give my best to my child

The Government should focus on benefit fraud which costs the tax payer thousands of pounds every week. Stamp out benefit fraud and grants such as these would not be an issue.

There are people who claim as single and have a partner who is working, there are people claiming who work off cards, there are people with many claims in different names etc etc.

What about people who do not WANT to work, people who state it is not in their interest to work or those that just sit on benefits because they can (I am not talking about people who are disabled or sick).

Please £190.00 per baby is nothing to give back to a honest taxpayer.

i know that people will never turn down "free money" but if your moral compass is telling you that you shouldn't claim it, then i think it is hypocritical to claim it and then slag off the government for wrongly offering you the money.

if you don't think you are entitled to something, then you shouldn't claim. it isn't about changing the world, but i firmly believe that you should live your life by what you believe is right, not put your thoughts aside for personal gratification.

i think if you accept the money then you lose your right to say it is a waste.

i have no issues with the HIP grant, i think it's beneficial to everybody to receive £190 towards the costs of a baby, regardless of their income.

If you are a single mother and cant work due to been late on in pregnancy and have to rely on income support until you are able to go back to work well how on earth are they expected to buy things like 400 quid prams and cots and what nots! i think its a good idea and scrapping it is going to make many suffer when they could be doing more intelligent things like putting tax up on fags and alcahol

Its free money, not many people would say no to free money lets be honest, if its being offered your going to take it. The goverment has to make cuts somewhere and not everyone really needs that £190 so cutting it i think is fair, there is also the child benefit which everyone gets paid no matter how much they earn is this fair also??

The Sure start grant is what helps low income families afford baby stuff, I am not entitled to it but my budget on buying baby stuff was less than £500. I have had to ask my family for help. A friend of mine gets about the same in benefits as i get in wages, she gets the sure start grant but i dont. This is where the benefit system doesnt work.

Im all for helping low income wage families but dissagree high earners are getting free money too when this country is so broke.. cuts have to be somewhere and i just dont want to see those in real need suffering because the goverment cant work out a decent system.

Summed up perfectly.

Seems this thread has taken on a life of its own.
Glad to have been at work LOL xx

thats the thing, people who are saying its wrong etc, most of them will of probably claimed for it anyway, which is very hypocritical :nope:

I earn a decent wage but I will still be claiming my HIP grant. As a single Mum who wants to take a year off with my new baby, I am saving every penny that I can get so that I can afford to pay my mortgage next year when little one arrives. So no, I don't agree that it all should be means tested, I am having to work my ar$e off when I've been sick and ill all the time so it's nice to receive a little something. I do agree that its wrong however that some people spend this on shoes and going out, thats jusy wrong...
