Does anyone else think £600 - £800 is a bit steep for a pram?! ** update last page **

I've found the whole pram thing really difficult. I'm not really one for peer pressure and don't care if people judge me when I walk down the street as long as my baby is safe and comfortable. I don't think you have to pay £700 for a pram to be comfy. I think people get really hung up on having designer prams and think that own brand ones are not as good when really often they are and just don't have the brand name.

We have actually bought 2 travel systems both 2nd hand. The first one is a mothercare one, gets really good reviews online (and from which) and we got for £40 (Think it would have been about £250 new). We got this for me to walk dogs as it has 3 wheels, I can fix the front wheel for jogging and if it gets muddy and hairy then it won't matter. We spent £300 on a 2nd hand i candy apple as well. This is the smart pram for showing off to the other mums!!! Interesting though the girl we bought it from paid over £700 for the whole thing but never used the pushchair part as once her baby got big enough she didn't want to have to keep the carrycot and car seat in her small house. She only used it for 7 months:dohh: Both of them are in spotless condition, the Mothercare one looks like it has never been used:thumbup:

Me and husband both have good jobs and yeah we could afford to spend £700 or even £1000 on a pram, I just don't think it's worth it for something I'll use for a couple of years and the baby won't remember. I'd rather put the extra money in the bank and put it towards my baby going to university or buying their first car.

I don't think it's to steep.

The pram I want is just under a grand.

I had a Bugaboo and will be buying another as they are so fab! Also getting a Silver Cross coach built pram for school run etc as so comfy

Prob cost £2000 for both but I buy for comfort not style

Tell you what i hate seeing and it is such a bugbear of mine. Mothers walking around with newborn babies in strollers where their heads are all looling to the side simply awful.

They need to be in a flat, mattressed lay down flat posistion.

You are soooo right that also drives me mad seeing it as well.

Anyway, prams, my favourite subject. After having a Mamas and Papas Pliko Travel system with my daughter costing £500 and absolutely HATING it with a passion, its flimsy aluminium frame, horrible carry cot, it was not soft lined or anythin! And actually the thing I hated the most was the fact that it had two separate handles for pushing it. Nightmare if you are in tesco with a little basket in one hand to buy a few things, as its almost impossible to push with one free hand.

This time round I will definately be getting a pram that has one solid bar for pushing, not least because I will also have a toddler to hold onto, and in fact, after observing and trying friends prams over the last 3 years, I will DEFINATELY be buying a Quinny Buzz with the maxicosi car seat and dreamy cot. It is really easy and light to push, extremely safe and comfortable, has a newborn stoller bit with proper car seat style straps for those who dont want to buy the dreamy cot, excellent idea quinny. and also has the larger stoller section to change to when baby is bigger.

It will total at around £500-£600 (if your sister doesnt work in a baby shop and get it half price for you hehe but id still be buyin it at the full price anyway!) My friends who bought this just after I got the mamas and papas are STILL using it, and it still is in like new order 2 years on, fantastic design well done Quinny!

Anyway just wanted to stick my 5p's worth in :haha:

I think some of the prices are shocking, I really do. And I don't think the argument "what's better than spending your money on your baby?" actually holds any water, because you aren't spending money on the baby, you're just buying "stuff". How many people do you see on here who are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th pram?!

Your baby needs something secure and comfortable, and you need something practical that can fit into your car (if you drive). That's all. The brand doesn't matter, the colour doesn't matter, the price tag doesn't matter.

Half of the people I know who have really expensive prams bought them for the same reason that they bought designer handbags, because they're showing off  It is just how some people live. Personally I find it really embarrassing to watch them.

You see the same on here, the ones who want the designer prams are the same ones who want the designer nappy bags  Complete waste of money IMO.

Sure, I can afford £1000+ for a pram, but do I think it is justified? Not a chance.

Same with spending more than £300 on a cot, what is the point? Or kitting out the nursery in baby sized furniture which will only last a couple of years before the hanging rails are too short. Why would you waste all that money?!

There are far more valuable ways to spend your money than overpriced baby kit, if you really want to invest in the child put the money into savings for it's education.

It is obviously a personal choice where you have to balance what you can afford to spend versus what you think the product is actually worth. If you have a fixed budget you decide where the money will be best spent, for me that means saving on the travel system so I can buy an Angelcare monitor.

I think it is one story of the pram is amazing quality and gets wonderful reviews, but quite another if it just looks nice and you want it because it is the most popular or because famous people have it!

I completely agree with you both!

Even the buggies that say safe from 0-4yrs, half of them don't come with head huggers, so the wee newbirn might be laying flat, but they are facing away from their mum & getting rocked about all over the place.

Of course you can buy head hugger inserts, but it is horrible to see when people haven't bothered.

I blame the pram companies for saying it is fine from birth without justifying this :hissy:

And I'm right with you on the 2 handle issue! It put me off so many prams.

I think people like them because you can put your shopping over the handles, but you can buy little hooks for bar handled prams too and that lets you hang shopping from them too

555ann555 - you are so right about people showing off there is alot of them round here!! And so right about the baby sized furniture, as my daughter has not enought room in her wardrobe for a while now, although we are using it again for the new baby so I suppose we will have got our use out of it, but wouldnt have if we werent expecting another right now.

I am definately going to get a Quinny, but for me, as you say, its about the practicality and comfort of it, not the name or price (as I am no designer lover, im more of a, how shall we say, have more of a variety of high street clothes person rather than 4 things because they are Prada person - not to cause offence to those prada buyers out there, but you are paying for the name mostly as the quality of designer stuff in my opinion can be severely lacking sometimes)

Also its worth mentioning to do alot of price checking on prams, sometims ebay is actually dearer than other websites, check out gumtree for closing down sales of baby shops expecially in this economy at the moment. And remember if theres a problem with your pram and youve spent alot of money its alot harder to get it sorted out if you buy online....

I think it's just a case of what you can afford. Whether you want to spend more or less is entirely up to the individual. Th travel system that I like is about £600.00 so this is my price. Having spoken with friends, this is about average.

That said, there are bargains to be had. Another girl on here a few weeks back got a lovely quinny buzz for about £400.00 max...also, there's ebay and charity shops.

It's sooo exciting isn't it!! :happydance:

It is exciting, I went pram shopping today & tried a few out...pushed them around the shop e.t.c It was so fun..lol. I tried them all, the bugaboo, silvercross, quinny.. xx

I agree it is far to much to spend on a pram alone... there is more important things to buy im not spending no more then £300 on a pram

even if a family member where willing to buy me a pram for £600+ id still say NO

I think it depends on what your price budget is and if the pram ticks all the boxes your after!
If I did have that money and it was exactly what I wanted I think its fine to spend that amount on something you will get alot of use out of.

I have got myself the silver cross sleepover, I know so early, but it was one that both DH and I agreed on, and I liked the big carrycot for when tiny, and it seems really sturdy and easy to push (in the shop) , I managed to get it on Ebay for £250, and it is emaculate. Our budget realistically would have been £400 tops, even if I get the car seat (which I am not sure about yet), I have still come under. I would not have been able to justify spending almost £200 more than the freeway on essentially a moses basket, it is mind boggling...

Well lol I have a designer handbag,Paddington by Chloe think was about £900 have used twice as dont like showing it off. I am buying individual nursery furniture, think cot is £700 and crib £300 but I have the money so dont care.

I buy dear but sell on for good amounts too.

I think up to people spending what they want/have. But I would never buy something just to show off I think quality for ME is paramount but if I couldnt afford stuff I would eBay as love it anyway

I bought the freeway (just as early as you ) but I bought it 6 months old. It honestly looks perfect, because they had bought it without trying to fit the chassis and the carrycot part into the boot of their car as they didn't buy it until she was almost ready to be born!

They couldn't return it as by time they discovered their mistake they'd already had it out and about with the ventura car seat on the frame!

(I found it on gumtree for £200 )

Exactly how I felt chick. I had all the money to buy a top of the range - got to the store, seen it, but found something I preferred better at almost £200.00 cheaper.

I'm not going to be forced into a flipping name or popularity contest over a pram.

Mines comfy, has temp gauge, its a travel system and it does me and will do Alex.

I hate that! I see it so much.

I can't tell the difference!

I just went on the silver cross website and I can't tell the difference between the sleepover and the freeway!

Is it because it can be used with the stand as moses basket? (you can do the with the freeway too is you buy the stand seperately)

BTW, I don't know if you saw the ventura car seat in the store, but it is great. It gets brilliant reviews for the baby's seating position, even from birth. Plus it clicks onto the base really easily too  And it is supposed to be from birth -> 12 months (obviously that would depend on the length of the baby's legs though).

Ooohhh a temperature gauge would be brilliant! Is the pram supposed to be the same temp inside as the nursery? (16-20 oC?)
