A friend of mine told me that she used to give her LO hungry baby milk for night feeds to help them go through the night longer. Has anyone else done this and been successful?

Are there any side effects to doing this? (constipation etc)

Hiya, we did this for a couple of days for the 11pm feed but it resulted in projectile vomiting for 5 week old.......I since read that hungry baby milk should only be given if LO is draining an 8oz bottle at every feed xx

Oh right! Maybe not such a good idea then! Thanks!

Hungry baby milk is really only there to delay weaning in babies that are draining 8/9oz bottles every hour or so.

we were advised by Ellies neonatal consultant at 17 weeks, 10 corrected to start introducing hungry baby milk as we were to wean her in a few weeks after that but she was prem and needed weaned early for various reasons, we did notice a diff in her she was a much happier baby, whether it was the milk or just a coincidence we will never know lol

the only diff is the way that the milk lies in the tummy normal milk is like think yoghurt and hungry baby milk is like cottage cheese (consistancy)

My health visitor told me to put my 7 week old on hungry baby milk because he was only going 1 1/2 to 2 hours between feeds and was having 5 oz a time but if you are going to give it to them only give them one milk, mixing formulas even if it's the same brand can cause tummy upset.

If hungry baby milk is only for babies who are draining 8/9oz bottles why can they have it from birth? my understanding is they don't have 8/9oz until they are 4/5 months old??

i dont think that it works i have not seen any difference,xx

We did at around 5 mths - so much older than your lo hun. I thought it worked until one night we ran out & gave normal formula again & she woke up at exactly the same time so didn't make much difference to us really

Babies are all different i guess some young babies could drain that amount but yes i suppose mostly it is 3/4/5 months so you would swap to hungry baby to try and hold off weaning, as for why it says from birth i dont know but you wouldnt put a newborn straight onto it yet saying from birth technically you could but like rusks say all ages on them or 4 months plus yet contain gluten which is a no no before 6 months so just because packaging says something doesnt mean its always the best thing.

This is just my opinion and i wouldnt swap a baby to hungry milk at a few weeks old in an attempt to get them to sleep longer. (I mean like OP's friend not refering to you)

Vinnie is already draining 5oz bottles every 1.5 - 2 hrs, so I'm about to up it to 6oz which I find a lot for a 5 week old. My HV said yesterday that it's fine & they don't recommend putting them on hungrier food until they are draining an 8/9oz bottle.

The way vinnie is going he'll be on hungrier food before we know it!!

I wouldn't advise giving 2 types of formula even if there the same brand. That's just asking for trouble x

Tried it. Didn't do a thing more than normal

I have to laugh when people with very young babies are wanting them to sleep longer. After 11 months I have given up that game!

At about 7 months we tried hungry baby for the last feed, all night feeds, all day and none of it made him sleep a minute longer. We have also tried Goodnight milk with cereals in it and that didn't work either.

How long is your LO currently going between feeds?

Hi
Yes I give eliza 6oz of hungry baby @ 10pm she then sleeps until 6:30am. No problems what do ever. She's gaining weight fine. Try it x

It's hard to know what to do for the best, I spoke to the hv about this again today as katie is on hungry baby milk on another hv reccomendation, she told me its fine and it's just a little thicker than the normal milk.

I however haven't put my LO On it to get her to sleep through the night I'm quite happy getting up and feeding her, sacrificing your sleep is part and parcel of having a baby. It's to be expected! Katie is on it for the simple reason that she was constantly hungry, never satisfied and was un happy because of this.

I also think there's a fine line between mothers intuition and hv's advice.

MY LO is on hungry milk but I dont see it helps him at all to sleep well. He has only been going 5 hours lately, after going 8-10 usually.

I was also told no to the hungry baby week when I tried my LO on it at 5ish weeks. It was making him quite sicky. When he did eventually transition over to it I found it didn't really make any difference to be honest.
