Does high sugar in urine usually mean GD?

I've just got back from my midwife appointment and I had a high level of sugar in my urine (4 pluses = ++++). I have a GTT scheduled for Monday morning. I had my breakfast 2 hours before my appointment.

My sister had GD with her 1st (undiagnosed - but she had a 9lb10oz baby who had respiratory distress when born) and with her 2nd (diagnosed - she had to go on insulin straight away - she was borderline on the test at the hospital but when doing the finger pricks at home had 3 in a row that were high so had to go back the next day) so I am more at risk anyway.

Does the high sugar in my urine and my sister's GD mean that I am pretty likely to have GD too?

Many thanks

Hannah

Hi :) often sugar in your urine is a good indicator, did you eat anything sugary before you did your wee sample? (i only ask because sometimes if you have eaten something sugary it will show up in your wee but doesn't necessarily mean anything)
The good thing is you are only 25 weeks so if the GTT does come back positive then you have time to get it under control :) xx

Hi Sarah10 thanks for replying. No I didn't eat anything sugary - I had breakfast 2 hours before (fruit & fibre with half a banana).

Ahh i see, well i really hope your GTT comes back okay, but try not to worry if it is diabetes, i was really shocked/upset at first, but usually food changes can keep your blood sugar levels normal, it doesn't mean you will have to go on insulin :) xx

Thats ok hannah, at least you have somebody who can give you some info :D did your sisters GD go away after she gave birth? x

Yes it did thankfully. Re food changes, I don't exactly eat a lot of sugary/fatty stuff anyway ... I eat brown bread, a fair amount of pasta, rice and potatoes and meat ... what kind of stuff do you have to change to?

I think generally those are okay, they tell you to switch to brown varieties of pasta/rice/bread etc. Also they say to cut out anything sugary like cakes, sweets, chocolate but then again if you don't really eat them thats okay xx

Diabetes runs in my family pretty well, so I had to take the test early on in my pregnancy and am now controlling it through diet and exercise. My aunt had GD and my mom is diabetic so I was pretty sure I would develop it.

I did though have a serious emotional breakdown when I got the results (hormones and things like that lol) but since you are earlier on in your pregnancy they shouldn't try to put you on meds straight away, you should be able to talk to a consult that will ask what kind of foods you are eating and when and how high your stress level is (at least they did me) and tell you what to change.

My cousin also has GD (she is 8 weeks ahead of me) and they caught it in her 33rd week and have her on meds now since diet alone didn't help and they didn't want to wait too long.

I think regardless of your results you will be ok and have enough time to find a solution other than insulin. G/L keep us updated!
