Don't really like cartoons, characters, etc

Edit: I think Winnie the Pooh has lost its original charm since it has been taken up by Disney. The original drawings and stories by A. A. Milne were lovely!

I do agree, I don't mind a well-crafted hand-drawn picture, in fact they're quite nice, it's just the garrish stuff that makes kids be like 'Mommy, buy me that!!!!'

I'm from the States and trying to persuade my husband that a Baltimore O's baby-gro is the cool thing to wear (at least when my dad comes over to visit) and somebody gave me a Sex Pistols baby tee-shirt, so I suppose different 'brands'?

best wishes

Sex Pistols, nice one! Unfortunately my OH is a giant Bob Dylan fan and the thought of his mug on a onesie gives me shivers ;)

Ooo forgot to mention DH wanted a Winnie the Pooh nursery. I put my foot down and said no way. I did get LO some Flyers hockey onesies and a ridiculously cute sweatshirt and pants combo. He is being born to a sports addicted daddy after all and I want pics of both of them in flyers tee shirts. I'll do anything to convince DH to actually have his picture taken.

That's funny, my OH's ex is from Philly and when they split up he ritually burned all of his Flyers, Phillies and Eagles gear!

I got some really cute clothes with generic tiny trucks saying "vroom vroom" etc. They are adorable. Also got a few with giraffes (my favorite) and a couple ones with itty bitty ducks. I dont like huge garish patterns or decorations and generally the specific character outfits are way more expensive, so win. DH got LOs coming home outfit and it's adorable! Blue plain long sleeve onesie with darker blue pants and a zip up striped vest with a penguin on it.

This is the kind of stuff I'm all for - I don't mind if it's got a really cute cat or rabbit on it, OH said if it's a boy we can find stuff with like a rocketship on it or something like that. Your stuff sounds really cute!

What dh and I have started collecting are DVDs of old shows like reading rainbow, schoolhouse rock, fat Albert and the Cosby kids shows like that with no huge money making character. We also (mainly me) registered for classic books we did read as kids. That's why I love amazon registry.

Ooh, yeah, we want to do this stuff, too. OH wants to get things like Aesops Fables, Peter and the Wolf, old Sesame Street episodes and I definitely want to get Schoolhouse Rock. I hadn't thought of Reading Rainbow, that's a really good idea!

EDIT: I know Disney did a version of Peter and the Wolf ;)

I already have the DVD collection of the Wombles lol. Seriously dated now but that too was a childhood memory of mine cause that 30 mins tv we got to watch often had a translated episode of the Wombles. I loved the idea of them living secretly on Wimbledon Common :D

What about Sesame Street? Muppets? I don't THINK those are owned by Disney (seems to be a general no-Disney sentiment). When I was growing up we loved Sesame Street and the Muppets movies and Muppet babies cartoon. We visited Sesame Place, etc.

I couldn't care less about Disney and neither does DH, but we also don't care in the other sense - if the kid likes Disney then I suppose he/she will like Disney! Also MIL is obsessed with Disney so I'm sure Disney will appear in our lives. I find adults' fascination with Disney much more strange than children who love the magical feeling a huge costumed character apparently gives them.

One thing's for sure, our kid will be sports-branded (Steelers!! if I have anything to say about it!) and I don't see much difference. ACTUALLY what's worse to me is walking into a store and seeing little girls' clothing (without characters or brands) that are short skirts and halter tops, literally halter tops for young girls -- that bothers me a great deal more than a kid wearing a tshirt with Minnie on it.

MUPPETS! You guys are great, coming up with stuff I've completely forgotten about. I loved watching The Muppet Show, I remember the one with Alice Cooper totally freaked me out (well I was only 6).

I know what you mean about the skimpy stuff and stuff with horrible logos - 'Future WAG' etc - nightmare.

It's not just the skimpy stuff I don't like. I find so many high street shops stock clothes that make children look like mini adults. I don't want my toddler to wear skinny jeans and tops cinched in at the waist (what waist?! She's 2!). I just want clothes that are practical for running around and tumbling about, that aren't covered in branding or characters. End of rant.

My favorite muppets book is the house of seven colors. Found that on amazon too!!!

Nice one, this gave me such a laugh. My SIL is lovely but insists on buying her little girls everything from Next but then has a go at them if they want to play 'cause the clothes will get dirty - get them different clothes!!!

I feel the same way with bikinis. I just don't get 4 year olds in bikinis.

I like so cartoons but then there are other that I hate, like Spongebob. Almost everyone I know likes Spongebob and I can't stand it at all. My parents don't like it either.

I completely agree! The only character I like Poppy to wear is Peppa Pig, but she ADORES peppa and always chooses tops with "pik!" on them to wear. i cant stand disney stuff :nope:

I also like LLBean stuff (there are some adorable fleece one-piece outfits with little ears on them, in neutral colours (as well as pink and blue)), but I have some of the 'old' classic American tv shows already on DVD (the 1960s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/ Frosty, etc.) so the baby will appreciate his American heritage....(oh, it's a boy), but hopefully, and I think one good thing, Ireland does have some Disney stuff (and a few stores in Dublin, actually), Peppa Pig, etc., but it's not everywhere, many of the stores have more animal stuff/trucks, etc.....

that said, we're sending the baby in a few years to Irish school and they wear uniforms, so that is one less 'branded' opportunity to be worried about...

best wishes,

p.s. bob dylan on a baby tee-shirt would scare me!

I'm only 18 and even i can't stand all that crap. I grew up on emmerdale, corrie and eastenders. Might be the reason i'm such a drama queen but i hate the cringey crap produced by Disney like all the princess rubbish. Oh and i could never stand barbies or anything like that either. I much preffered making mud pies and playing with the woodlice from underneath the bricks of the BBQ my dad made:blush: You're definitely not alone xxx

And you would think by the stuff you see on TV that only boys like that.

My OH hates cartoons but I absolutely love them, especially Disney ones. We are even doing a Winnie the Pooh nursery... although that took some convincing and bribing on my part. I absolutely love the older Disney stuff like Bambi and Classic Winnie the Pooh. <3

Not so much a fan of newer cartoons shows and movies at all though.

I personally love cartoons but HATE cartoon advertised clothing >.< the closest thing I like to cartoon stuff for baby clothing is animals done in the baby style (especially elephants :) ) but for me, I really hate pink. ALOT and I'm having a girl  :haha: I know everyone will buy us pink things and girly girly stuff but I will secretly resent them. Here's to hoping everyone will stick to buying us diapers and wipes and I'll buy all the particulars :haha: (though I'll use anything anyone throws at us lol)
