Hi,

one of my friends has recommend Dr Browns bottles to me. I was just going to get some Boots own brand ones, so I was wondering if any of you have used them what you actually think of them.

I've done some reading and the technology sounds clever and the price is expensive, but I don't mind that if it is worthwhile.

I have a few questions though:

- when you buy a single/twin/quad pack do all the bottles come with caps, covers and teats? or do you have to buy all the bits individually?

- can you only get the standard bottles in wide neck? And is the wide neck any different to the narrow neck, anywhere else on the bottle? I see you can get "BPA free" in narrow but that seems to push the price up even more!(I don't like the wider bottles like the tommee tippee as I have small hands and find them awkward to hold) so I was wondering if it is just the neck that is narrower or if it is the whole bottle?

- I am not sure which milk I will go with, probably Aptilmil, but I see there is a normal and easy digest one. The Easy Digest is said to be thicker so therefore would it be advisable to get the Y teats for these bottles if I did go for that milk?

All the bits come with the bottles. And they are well worth the price if your baby has colic. We bought a full set of tommee tippee bottles only to find they were no good for caitlyn we then invested in dr browns and they are fab xx

I use Dr. Browns and I just started with the nipple that came with it. Here it is sometimes hard to find the levels 2 and levels 3 nipples so I stocked up when I saw them. Same with those little brushes to wash the parts, I would buy an extra pack of those (I forget if they come with the bottles? probably not)

The little brushes come with the bottles yes.
I use the number 3 teats for Leo as he is on reflux milk which is thicker, I could never find the Y teats anywhere.
The whole of the bottle is wide yes.
Personally I love them, but they do have a few annoying flaws. If you make a feed up thats too warm and shake it the milk goes everywhere (even with cap fitted) and sometimes the inner pipe thing can get clogged, especially if you use a thicker feed like I do.

Ive used them for 9 months and they are GREAT! But i need to replace them now and due to jacob being older and no longer colicly i am going for a cheaper easier to clean brand as he only has 2 bottles a day :) XxxX

Also, when it comes to teats I would recomment buying a few of each at first to see which is best for your baby. You dont know yet if he/she will be a strong sucker or slow etc. Unless you are using a real thick feed(c&g comfort) then You wont need a level 3 teat at first. So I would maybe buy y teats and number 2's as they come with 1's and see which your baby prefers. x

if yr baby has colic they are a life saver!!!

they have been worth every penny for luisa xxx

We love them here! :happydance: We had bought loads (ie 9 big ones and 4 small ones!!) of TT bottles before Findlay was born but the teats are just too big for his mouth so he has been using the Dr Brown preemie bottles and we're about to start trying him on the 'big boy' version which just looks so enormous!!

We used these after switching from breastfeeding. They were great! Erica had a hard time with formula, and was very spit-upy. We tried soy formula, easy to digest formula, but in the end, regular formula with the Dr. Brown or Bornfree bottles worked best. I haven't used the wide neck so I'm not sure about those, we have the glass and bpa free plastic ones. They do come with the brushes, but only one brush per pack of bottles. I've found that we needed to buy extra brushes. The pack comes with everything you need to start with tho, the piping, collars, nipples, and lids. I'd def recommend them. :D

Yes the BPA free does make them more expensive but it is so worth it. I asked my sons pediatrician about reusing the old Browns bottles with the baby on the way... she highly recommended that we invest in glass or BPA free. She said that many of the "expensive" bottles contain BPA and to make sure to get bottles without it.

I used Dr. Browns with my son. He also had very bad reflux. I have never used the Y nipples but invested in the size 2 and 3. 3 Might be too much for a newborn (?) as we started with a 2. I have never used the wide neck ones as they didnt come out until after I had bought the skinny ones. Like the other ladies said all the parts come with it including brushes but for sure get extra brushes... they arent too expensive.

I bought a 3 pack of the 8oz wide-neck bottles.. they came with all the parts (nipples/teats, the venting system, cap, and travel insert - prevents leaks..) They're BPA free (polypropylene)

The narrow neck bottles are narrow the whole way down the bottle. I have small hands and don't have a problem using the wideneck bottles.

I would try the nipples that come with the bottles and then see where you need to go from there, personally. I don't think that the different formula will make THAT much of a difference TBH in what you need with a newborn.

Thank you girls for all your replies. I mentioned the bottles to hubby on the phone last night, I was joking about the massive choices available for quite literally everything including bottles and I said how these ones had some science-y stuff attached whereby the air is forced down a central tube thingy and bleugh anyway, stops the baby getting colic and wind. He got it immediately and was quite taken by the idea - gotta love being married to an engineer!!

So I think I will go to Boots and see if I can handle a couple to see how they feel and I'll take it from there.

Thank you all so much for your input!!!

*edit* one last thing - I saw on a review somewhere that they only fit their own steriliser which appears to be a microwave one. Surely the bottles will fit into a standard milton bucket which you can use the tablets with? Although cost of tablets v a couple of minutes in the micro - another discussion for another day!!

i use dr browns and have an avent and tommie tippie steriliser

they fit into the tommie tippie no problem because it can also be converted to a cold water steriliser but struggle in the avent one.

My husband is an engineer too. hahaha I know what you mean.

I don't use a sterilizer, here what most people do is just boil their bottles.. in boiling water for 3 mins

I've used them since I started FF and they are fab - all comes with it you just need to buy bigger teats after a few months when the old ones are too small. x x

These are amazing, we bought TT ones but they, well, sucked :p Dr Brown all the way!

we just bought some yesterday as zach has colic :-( they seem to be going great so far....although we have to remind zach to take it slowly as he gets a little eager sometimes.
weve got the mothercare own brand steriliser and they fit perfectly in there.

xx

I had tommee tippee first, lilly always had wind though and was up alot with it, so i changed to dr browns and she had hardly any wind and slept through as she didnt have trapped wind making her uncomfy, i still use them now and shes 17 months lol she only has 1 bottle before bed x
