Do I need to be giving my 13 day old baby water to drink on top of his formula or is he fine as he is??

I offer Riya sometimes fennel tea (made with water) in between her formula feeds, sometimes she takes it other times not. It seems to settle her stomach. I'm sure just water alone is fine aswell, esp if your baby seems dehydrated or anything.

As far as I know, the only reason to give a baby water is if they're constipated. Otherwise, milk (breast or formula) is the only thing you need to give.

I would say he's fine with just forumla but go with what your instinct say. Are you worried he's not getting enough fluid?

Maley used to get quite dehydrated so used to offer her an ounce of water in the middle of the day.

I've given Marley a little water, only a few times. He only ever drinks a few sips or at the most about 1/2 an oz. I do it if his lips seem a little dry or if it was a very hot day...now I do it if it's a colder day and we've been using the fireplace/heaters a lot.

my Hv said not to give water until she was 12 weeks... now i offer her a few sips between feeds, but the risk of giving it is that you fill them up and they take less milk.. if the bottles are made up with the right amount of water he shouldnt need any water unless hes ill / constipated xxx

No I would say it isn't necessary. BM or Formula is all he needs.

I forgot to say that Leyla was quite dehydrated before my milk came in and ended up in hospital for a day. They couldn't get a drip into her so they suggested supplementing breastmilk with formula, which we did and they were happy that she was getting enough fluid. They never even mentioned giving water to her.

I would say no, she is fine on just formula or breastmilk. I didn't give any water until 2 or 3 months, and it was because at the time we were in the middle of a heat wave.

He should not need anything else apart from milk. My LO has only started drinking water this week and he is almost 9 months, i have offered it before now but he wasnt interested.

I give Brady 1-2 oz of water a day because he gets constipated otherwise even though I use the right amount of water in his formula. Sometimes formula fed babies need it but I only started coz the MW recommended it.

I only give water if Ruby is fussy...it helps calm her sometimes.

my doc told me give water if dehydrated, constipated, having bottles less than 2-3hrs apart or baby has white spots in mouth (which could be start of thrush.)

baby will take it if it wants it. you're not allowed to dd juice to it until 12weeks.

blake will happily take 2-4oz water most days. whereas if i up his milk he is sick. he's doing fine and putting on weight so docs n HV dont mind.

unless it is quite warm or he seems dehydrated/ constipated i wouldnt think it neccesary,

unless constipated I'd say they're fine with BF or FF. I haven't offered my LO any water at all and will prob only do when I start weaning him.

i asked the midwife this in hospital and was giving a sharp reply of 'NO' nothing but milk till 6 months! So i do what i always do, went to my mother who refreshed my memory, i used to give Aria the odd ounce of water as she was born in the summertime and i felt she needed a little bit more fluids that what she was getting. It did her no harm and if i feel my wee one will need some extra fluids then cooled boiled water is what he will have :-D

I think water can be given after 3 months. The foremilk in breastmilk is over 87% water, so that should be all they need. :)
