Drop Down Cribs - Recall

i personally would never use one even converted because i would continue to feel uneasy so i was content purchasing a new crib for ds and i have a non drop down for my dd on the way. Guess convienence isnt always the best thing eh?

The drop sided cribs arent going to be allowed to be sold in stores anymore or even at garage sales in the US.
i had a drop sided crib for 8 months but she never slept in it. Well i just bought her a fixed sided crib and she sleeps in it now.

Bumping this thread because I'm worrying.

Now that I'm finally feeling the baby move and kick, the reality of getting the house ready is hitting me. We have a drop side crib at my parents and here at the house. My hubby wants to just secure it with a nail/screw but found that even the recall kits aren't all that safe. So we decided to try and just get rid of the crib on Craigslist, rather than throw it out. Turns out, you cant even do that. I got an email from a consumer commission worker stating that its illegal to sell or give away these recalled cribs. Their "recommendation" is to throw it away.

So what are your thoughts? I think we're going to have to drop the cash for peace of mind. I know how much money it can cost but the risk seems to send me, and my hormones, over the edge.

We personally had this own debate in our family. I intended to use my crib which was a drop-side. Then my in-laws pointed out an article about the new law and the recall of them. Honestly I wasn't all THAT worried since the drop side mechanism on ours was metal and not plastic (almost all of the problems were from plastic hardware) plus we were sure the thing was put together right. The statistics aren't terribly shocking either. Over a 10yr period 31 kids were killed as a result of the drop side cribs, but we don't know the circumstances or the crib type (metal/plastic). In my opinion 31 deaths over 10yrs is a pretty low statistic, not saying it isn't tragic but it isn't like 50 or more a year.
However, our in-laws offered to buy us a new crib if we so choose to replace the old one. After many discussions on this we went for the new crib. The final reasoning was, sure it is probably safe and it is probably just fine but....what if....what if something was to happen and we were stuck saying "if we would have just gotten the new crib things would have been fine"
My parents are still going to use the drop side at their house for when Roxas stays with them since that won't be for all that long anyways and I know my parents are not going to just leave him unattended for very long either. I'm not all that concerned or else I would never allow it to be used, but at home where he will spend more time in the crib I decided to go with safe vs. sorry.

No, that was helpful! I've had a lot of the same thoughts, especially considering the statistics but my thought is exactly the same: What if. I just couldnt live with it plus we will have to time to save up for a new crib if need be since the little one will be with me or in the pack n play mostly.

Oh no! We just bought a new cot from the shop and its drop-down Almost all the cots I've seen at the shops here in australia are drop down...I'm worrying now

We have a drop side crib we got from an aunt of ours. The best thing to do is check to make sure all the parts are there, they are not broken, and are in good shape. If the crib looks shaky (the drop side bars are plastic or rusted), they have conversion kits you can buy. If you can't find a conversion kit, you can purchase hardware at Lowe's or Home Depot and secure it. The crib we were given is solid wood and all the pieces are made of metal and we've done numerous tests on it, it's mainly a concern for cheaper cribs with cheaper made parts. xx

Im wondering if the US cots are made differnt? We still have drop-side cots here and so does AUS with no re-calls and Ive never seen a newpaper article about a baby dying from one.

Then again Ive heard Baby walkers are illegal in Canada? And the Carseat RF rules are different in america to the uk again.
