Hi ladies was just wondering if anyone thats breastfeeding used or are using a dummy and if so at what stage did you start using it??? I've had a look and a lot of websites advise not to use them before 4-6 weeks My DS has been very fussy over the last few days and my LLL Leader thinks he's a "sucky" baby and wants to nurse for comfort rather than cos he's hungry. Was going to try a dummy but wasn't sujre if i run the risk of nipple confusion at his age, he's 4 weeks and 2 days.:baby:

I don't think many babies have nipple confusion I believe it is just a precaution, because it *can* happen. I think you are fine starting him at 4 weeks, though he might not even take it... Alexa would never take a dummy. Good Luck!

I felt like Poppy was the same, always sucking for comfort but she has never taken a dummy and still won't!

Hebe sucked for comfort and I gave her a dummy straight away. I had to ditch it after a week to get my supply up but she definately didnt get confused - i re-introduced it at about 3 weeks with no problems. I can tell a comfort suck now over a hungry suck. Her comfort suck is very gentle - almost a quiver.

I say give it a whirl!

When I wad at the hospital they actually advised me to use it because it helps their sucking muscles develope and I was trying to bf at this time.

Alfie does the flutter suck too, think i'll try hbim with one and see. Thanks girls

Definitley give one a go. Oliver had one from about 3 weeks. :baby:We had to stick with it before he was comfortable with it, but now he loves it. And it gives me a lot more Me time!!!:happydance:

Seths had one since about 2 weeks, and he's been fine. It helps him sleep better too.

Hi I've BF since she was born and used a dummy from about 1 week old as she "comfort sucks" too like Lisa said - a gentle little suck - it helps her settle and I have had no problems with confusion and her latching on has been absolutely fine x x

Hi I was BF and I gave Toby one around 4 weeks. I was advised to by the midwife as he was sucking for comfort. xx

Hi hun! I was bf and was worried about a dummy. Abi was sucking alll the time.I found some tomme tippee closer to nature ones which are shaped like the nipple when the baby sucks.I did this and found no problems.I'm now bottle feeding and they dont work!good luck xx

Callum has had one since around 3 weeks, and hes fine! Helps him fall asleep xx

Sorry another question, we didn't need to give him one after all last night as he slept from 11-2 then 3-7 i couldn't believe it, but just incase we do need to give him one, did you all have your latch by this time as i am still struggling with painful nipples as his mouth is too small just now to latch correctly, just worried incase this effects him learning how to latch correctly.

We were latching fine so maybe work on that a bit longer if you can just to be sure. :)
