Hi am going thru ICSI and egg retrieval scheduled soon. Can anyone tell me if egg retrieval is painful? Am getting my treatment on the NHS at the Royal in Belfast and was told that no sedation is given. I am dreading it. If anyone had it done there, would greatly appreciate your experience. Thanks

Welcome to BnB!

I'm going to move your thread over to the LTTTC and Assisted Conception Forum. You'll get alot more answers to your questions there. :hugs:

Hi Chris77 thank you for moving my thread to LTTTC. I am new to all of this and have absolutely no idea how things work..

Hi Mathilda,

Welcome along, Ive just had our first ICSI which was successful. And am a NI girl also!!! I didn't go to the Royal, we were with Origin. However, did they tell you that you don't have a general anaesthetic? As in you won't be out cold.

I had twilight sedation, which meant I wasn't out cold but wasn't completely aware either. I wouldn't imagine that they would do EC with nothing at all. Everyone is different, some people say it is completely painless. I'll be totally honest and say it wasn't painless for me.. but it was bearable and I would do it again!!

Also depends on how many follicles they will be draining, I had 20 so was bound to feel something! Try not to worry about it, it is quick and over in no time. I would ring to check about anaesthetic. You'll have to let me know I'll be going there for my free NHS go and no way would I do EC with nothing!!

Good luck :hugs:

Hi jojoD,

Thks for your honest reply regarding pain with EC. I am a total coward when it comes to pain, so really not looking forward to EC. I am afraid of fainting or hyperventilating and by doing so making it difficult for gynae to retrieve follicles. At my next appointment I will ask again about sedation, but am pretty sure my IVF nurse told me no sedation at all. She said they will give me some pain relief + gas and air if deemed necessary.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, its fantastic that your first attempt was successful.

Will let you know how my EC goes at the Royal.

So far my experience with the staff and nurses at the Royal has been good, lets hope it keeps going that way for the rest...

Good luck, keep me posted. I'll be thinking about you :hugs:

Hi JojoD

I am just updating you on my Egg Retrieval at the Royal. Sorry it took a bit long as I was so down after a BFN that I stayed away from internet.

They gave me a pain killer by IV and allowed me a bit of gas and air which you can get upon request. It was not painless, I felt the needle going into my right ovary and screamed but after that the pain subsided. I was awake and aware of everything going on, but felt slightly drowsy and lost a sense of time. It felt like procedure lasted 5 mins when it was really 15-20 mins according to DH. They retrieved 22 eggs. The nurses were very nice and helpful.

Overall it was a good experience at the Royal, the only problem is that I always got seen by a different person at all my appointments, so its a bit strange if you want consistency. I suppose they are under pressure having to deal with long waiting lists.

Best wishes and good luck with your pregnancy.

Mathilda

Hi JOJOD,
i am about to begin icsi treatment at Origin in Belfast so if you could fill me in on what to expect etc, id be very grateful as this is all new to me. First go! Bella:shrug:

Hi Bellabaggins

I've been to origin a couple of times and found them to be great. I saw Sami Farrag most of the time but depending on when your EC is, it may be performed by another consultant. I found the EC to be completely painfree - in fact, I had some lovely dreams while they collected the eggs, and the nursing staff were great afterwards.

You have nothing to worry about regarding EC or any aspect of the treastment. Good luck with your treatment and fingers crossed you are successful.

Hi bella - Im also at Origin

Maz mentions Dr Farrag but he has just left and there is a new lady consultant. Havent had her yet myself so cant remember her name!

My EC wasnt so bad this time around but last time was! I had some empty follicles - i think the more poking around they do the more painful it can be but i dont remember a thing about it and you just wake up a bit sore and cramy but its all bearable.

Good luck with your treatment!
