Not sure if this is the right place to post but I was looking for some advice.
We BF our first child for a week. Unfortunately we could just never get going properly and she was quite poorly for various unconnected reasons. We switched to formula.
In all honesty we're planning to bottle feed again in the long term, this time however, I have been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. I've been advised that collecting colostrum from 36 weeks can be helpful to raise the baby's blood sugar if there are problems after birth. No problem, as my supply was always good the first time and I've been leaking again this time. So taking what I remember from last time and watching a few youtube videos for a refresher I sat down Wednesday to try and express. It was more an experiment and I was able to get a little from both. So last night I sat down with a syringe and was really pleased to fill it quite easily! However that was mainly from my left side. Whenever I try my right side I find it a bit painful as the nipple seems to pull in and I get a tiny bit (if lucky) rather than the bead I get from the left. A quick google and I gather I have a small inversion I was never aware of before. Who knew!
So now I'm not sure what to do. Shall I keep trying from that side? I don't want to make myself sore before baby is here. What I read on google was that even though it's inverted that doesn't mean baby wouldn't be able to latch (although it is possible) but it was something to do with them using more of the breast. Obviously if this one is happy to go on the breast that will probably be easier for those early feeds than using what I've expressed already, this is more of a back up should we end up with a repeat of last time.
What I wanted to ask is would it be ok to pump the right side? I have a manual breast pump upstairs, we bought it last time and never ended up using it. I was thinking I could dust it off, sterilise and give it a go. Does anyone have any experience with inversions? I do leak from the right, so it seems a shame to ignore that side if it's possible to get it out another way.
Anyway, I'm rambling now! Any advice would be appreciated.
