I have been exclusively BF for nearly 6 months now... I have only had sore boobs once or twice in that time, generally during growth spurts.. but for the last couple of days I have been in toe curling agony... my nipples are sooo sore, I am starting to dread feeding Lani..

We have been weening onto solids the last couple of weeks and although she has taken to it really well and is taking quite a bit of food in (rather than all over!) she is still having plenty of BM and has probably only dropped the equivalent of half a feed in the morning and the same in the afternoon...

The other change is that I feel as if I am going to start my periods again - probably because of weaning even though we still have a night feed - I have had cramps, increased CM and a spot breakout, pretty classic AF signs for me..

Sooo - Im not sure, is it possible the return of AF is causing my sore nipples? Is it likely to be something else to do with the weaning?

As far as I can tell Lani hasnt changed her latch etc - and the only change with her feeding is that as she isnt feeding as frequently, she is feeding for a bit longer as my breast are more engourged by the time we feed..

Help!! xx

Yep, AF can do that. As can pregnancy :)

Also teething changes saliva ph and sometimes this causes a bit of nipple pain.

Of course thrush is another option..... but AF seems a likely candidate.

Thanks - I though AF might be the cause.... although have also considered thrush as I am thinking Lani feeding after eating might have cause me to get thrush? Havent had it before so not sure what other symptoms might be?

Before I read your entire post, my immediate thought was that AF was probably about to return. Its a change in your hormones that is most likely causing this pain. So yea - I think you are right and thats probably what it is. But don't worry - if thats it, things should go back to normal soon.

If its thrush - you will probably need treatment to help it. Did you look in baby's mouth to see if she has any white in it? If you have it, baby very well may too, and then you would know what the problem is for sure!

Thanks ladies - having chatted to my HV and the fact that Lani nor myself have any signs of thrush, I have put it down to AF returning (although still not happened yet!) - I am a bit more comfy today so I think my hormones must have been quite high for a sort of practice AF (IYNWIM?) and have gone back to normal again...

I was going to post the exact same thing! In hoping it's AF and I'm not pregnant!!!!!
