Omg we got Anya's last neonatal appointment through the post. Not until March 2013, but a few questions (panicking already).

Dr Kissack told us to be prepared for it to take a few hours. Wth do they do that it could take that long? And the appointment is in Leith, is that where it normally is? Bugger cos I was going to pop up the NNU with a few wee gifts. I'm so worried about the appointment, Anya isn't walking yet (but she can count to 10, lol), is it like pass or fail? Do they grade how well she is doing? And do we get a report of it?

Think that's all for now. Ta muchly to anyone who can answer any my questions. Mwahhhhhh. :flower:

My goodness they are getting organised now. We got a phone call on the day Holly turned 2 corrected asking could we go the following week lol.

It will be Hilary that does it and it's called the Bayley's test. They basically play with them and monitor their fine motor skills, cognitive skills, gross motor skills, speech & recognition. It is things like shape puzzles, taking cheerios out of a small tub and putting them back in, pointing at things in a book etc.

From that she will work out developmentally where she is within each of these areas. The results are to identify if you can be signed off completely or do you need referred to paediatrics, although Anya will already be on the paediatric books as she gets physio so it will decide if she will need any further help. At our appointment Hilary also told me that it was about to change and all babies born under 28 weeks will be referred to paediatrics even if the results were fine so that may be in place by the time you go.

You also get a questionnaire to fill in which is a bit of a joke but think it is for up to 4 year old. Can your child carry hot liquids. Hmm she is 2 I am not going to check that one....

Make sure you take a drink and snacks with you just in case. If she can count to 10 just now then she will do great :flower:

They really are organised, we had to chase Sophie's up and got about 5 days notice!!

It's exactly as 25 weeker said, and Sophie's lasted about an hour. We did get a written report afterwards as well, and a copy went to our GP. It basically tells you what percentile they're now on for height and weight, and a summary of how they did at each of the tasks they had to do.

Ours was in Leith as well but I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you popped into NICU at some point, because our letter says to let them know from time to time how Sophie is getting on - it says they're always interested in how the babies get on. xxx

Hun you can come up to NICU whenever you like hun, you are always welcome to visit x

It's not so much a pass/fail but it highlights the areas where Anya may need support in the future. It was probably the best thing for is as it got the ball rolling for referrals to the places we needed to go.

We have quite a lot in place already, so that's good. We see community OT, community physio, community paed consultant, speech and language, dietician, and she goes to a special needs playgroup on a fri morning, although will go to mainstream nursery and school (I'm sure there are more folk we see but can't think who). I got her a new picture dictionary book so we can start doing homework, lol. Xx
