Fetal heartbeat skipping?

Yesterday as I was listening to my baby on the doppler I noticed her heartbeat was strange. Today it hasn't changed any. I took a video of it to see if anyone else had the same thing and had any suggestions. I'm trying not to freak out but I can't help it. I wish I never bought this thing!

I would mention it to your dr. I do hear what you are hearing. It does sound like a murmur. But that doesn't mean it's life threatening. My 2 boys have or have had murmurs/heart defects and live normal lives. My little may need a valve replaced someday but for now he can do anything he wants. My oldest grew out of his murmur.

I'm not saying that's it for sure as maybe it's the Doppler shorting out or something, but, all you can do is mention it to your dr and see if you need further testing. Good luck!

I can't listen to the video here at work, but you mentioned skipping....could it be the baby moving around? At my 17 week apt, my doc was listening to the heartbeat via Doppler and it kept going in and out...it would be fine for about 20s econds, then would stop and then start again. Doctor said it was because the baby was moving around. Just wondering if that could possibly be the case for you? I would probably get a doctor's opinion as well, though.

I re listened to it,and most of the pauses I think could be the baby moving. I kept the tempo of the hb and it did stay on after the long pauses. However there were a couple double beats or small skips that I would question. Id have a dr check just in case. I'm not a dr but it's always better to be safe than regret not asking later.

Exactly this, have a doctor check it out to be safe. We lost our son, at 32 weeks. He had a heart murmur and sadly our doctor was not watching me closely enough....Better to get a doctor to make sure all is good and if baby has a heart murmur make sure the are keeping a good eye on it. I will never, ever trust a doctor again after what we experienced....I have a much more open to my suggestions now and plan to be out of work in the third tri for every other day scans at the hospital even if baby does not have a heart murmur this time around...

Is there anything they can do for a heart murmur or any other heart problems at this stage or while in the womb? I am not at viability yet if anything was wrong. We have our anatomy scan in a week and I think they will be checking the heart so I think I will for sure know if there is something not right then.

Sadly I didn't get very good care so I would really work with your doctor and come up with a good plan. By the time I found reduced movement my son had been with out oxygen for over 24 hours....I think they should have been checking me much more and not only with a doppler, I think I should have been having every other day stress tests to be honest.

They can give you medicine, to go to the baby, if the heart beat goes to fast. That was the "worst case scenario" and sadly it happened. My son basically went into a heart attack and none of the doctors would listen to me. We are consulting a lawyer now but that will never, ever bring him back.

I do think they can do stuff in utero for baby if there is a murmur. It would depend on the severity though. Did you do any genetic tests? They may suggest some if you haven't.

I know with my heart murmur there was nothing actually wrong with the heart. They described it as the system of electricity for the baby to pump the heart was behind from the actual heart and should "catch up" by birth. By not watching it very closely he passed....

They have options, to include the biophysical (stress tests) done more frequently at the end of the pregnancy as well as more frequent US's at the OB office.

Honestly they are supposed to be fine once birth comes or correct themselves shortly there after.

Also, the heart murmur didn't start until 23 weeks, well after the anatomy scan.

Are you pushing too hard with the doppler? You can disrupt/stop their heart if you are preshing too hard near the chest area. Be very gentle with the doppler!

Exactly this! This is why I never got a doppler! :haha:

I would have a Doctor look into it, but honestly, until a Dr. says something I would think everything is OK!

Thank you ladies very much for your help. CastawayBride I am so very sorry for your loss. My SO suggested I don't play with the doppler anymore since its freaked me out. Our anatomy scan is next Friday on the 23rd so I am hoping they will be able to tell if something is wrong or not. It could be too that I am pressing too hard, sometimes it is hard to hear her and I get my own heartbeat more often so I may have been pressing too hard to get to hers. I feel a bit reassured that if something is off that it will be okay still.

Okay, so I ended up getting the doppler out again (I have no self control) just to check this. I think this might have been it. I didn't press down at all this time and just set it on my belly to glide. I found her heartbeat and it wasn't skipping or anything at all. She was moving A LOT, but it was strong, loud, and steady and never actually skipped or stopped. It was either this or just something that was happening for the time being and went away. I can't seem to find any information on it, but thank you :) I feel a lot better now!!

I am glad! Be gentle with the doppler :) You don't need to push at all really at this stage. Good luck!!

I had then same thing happen to me today, ive just checked it again but used the doppler lightly and its back to normal.
I have my 20wk scan so wednesday so i will see what they say.
I think i will leave using my doppler now and only use it if i need to use it.
That really scared me.. im so glad you wrote this tread x

It's so scary isn't it?! I'm so glad this thread helped you. It is scary knowing that I was the one stopping her heartbeat! Hope everything goes well at your scan, mine is Friday :)

My little ones heart did the same they said its common and its a skip but not missed beat so its nothing to worry about...he is now 2 :)

They td me the same and my son passed from it. You need to have a good dr if anyone ever has this diagnosis as children do pass from it...just bc it is common does not mean due diligence should not occur! I'm passionate after the lost of my son and the laziness on the dr part who says this!
