I am 6 days post-partum.

On Saturday at 4am, I was awoken with chills. I was shaking for about 20 minutes and they subsided. I checked my temperature when I woke up around 7am, and it was 100.6F. I had no breast pain to speak of at the time.

I called, and my doctor had me go be seen. They checked the healing on my stitches and tear, which looked fine. My bleeding isn't excessive, and doesn't have any funny smells. They pulled blood work to check my white blood cell count to see if there was a hint of infection that they couldn't physically see, but everything came back great. I was also checked for a UTI and there was no bacteria present.

I was finally told just to keep up with ibuprofen. Well, the next day (today, Sunday), my breasts started to feel very hot. They are NOT overly engorged and only a little painful (more from my dd2's bad latch). They are just very hot and with that comes the 100.6 fever and just feeling kind of off.

I spoke again with my doctor, who told me to push fluids and continue taking ibuprofen (which brings my fever down 100% and removes the heat and mild pain from my breasts).

She mentioned it's possible that I might have a low-grade fever from my milk coming in (not mastitis). Is this something anyone has heard of before? It just seems strange to have a low grade fever because of milk coming in. I am also SUPER sweaty all day, like I'm sweating out the pregnancy LOL!

Any of this sound normal? Should I push for another appointment? My breasts LOOK and FEEL pretty much fine, other than being hot when they get fuller, but my DD has been good at emptying them. I can't feel any plugged ducts, and they feel nice and squishy after she eats.

Just hate wondering what this stupid fever is from!

Thanks! xx

I had this with my first, woke up in the night shaking in cold sweat. Thought I was getting the flu, but just milk coming in as it subsided quickly like you said yours did. I didn't notice it with my 2nd, but I did get mastitis with him at about 2 weeks. This was SO much worse, aches, pains, shaking, fever and of course a really sore boob. Straight to the Dr for antibiotics with that one.

Good luck!

I got this with my second as well. I had it at night for about 3 days before it subsided.

I had it where I felt unwell sore head throat and achy on day 4 when my milk came in. I was still in hospital asbabt was in NICUsothetpushed fluids and painkillers and I expressed alto relieve the pain a bit. At day 5 I really struggled with my left side becoming painful and lumpy asbabt hasn’t fed since day 2 on the other side has to beg BICU to let me feed him which they did with support and god it felt better

I didn’t take my temperature at the time but I do remember having night sweats a few times in the early days, I just assumed it was a reaction to the hormones or sudden lack of!

I had a fever, sweats and chills for about 3 days when my milk came in this time (but not with my first). I chalked it up to an actual infection (chest infection, I was also sick with a cold at the time and GP found fluid on my lungs when I went for an urgent appt), but I have always wondered if it might have been due to milk coming in and not my chest. I was on antibiotics for a week though, which led to thrush, which was a bit of a pain on top of everything else. Hopefully you're feeling better by now whatever it was.

I know that when breastfeeding, oxytocin causes the temperature of your chest and abdomen to increase. I assume this is to help keep baby and you warm while feeding. Perhaps (just like the body overproduces milk) sometimes we overproduce heat too, due to oxytocin surging around. Whatever the cause, ibuprofen or paracetamol/tylenol will reduce your temperature - your body cooling down due to ibuprofen doesn't suggest any particular cause.

It is actually quite common to get the sweats after giving birth, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you, it’s the massive change in hormones rushing through your body. I’ve had it all three times, it lasts a few days and then is gone.

You could also have just had a mild virus too, mastitis is not the only other explanation.

Just an update-

I had the “fever” every day starting at around 6pm for 5 days straight... my temp would drop again after I went to sleep. It was the strangest thing. No infection found, no illness.

I ended up going to a naturopath/herbalist for Chinese medicine and was diagnosed with “five palm heat”, which essentially means that my hormones were out of whack and the cooling system of my body was compromised. After following his suggested dietary and herbal regimen, the night sweats and fever were gone and I was feeling great 2 days later! (He also mentioned that this IS something that my body would have self-regulated, but just gave me steps to help the process.) It likely did begin with my milk coming in.

It was the strangest thing!! I got up to 101 every night for 5 days! Doctor said I was a medical mystery- but it’s all ended now.

Thanks everyone!!!

Glad to hear you're doing ok now.

Ps: i like your username - trekkie??

Everything! But I particularly enjoy Voyager & Next Generation. I haven’t seen Discovery yet! Do you like it?

Yeah those two series are probably my faves as well! :)

Discovery took a few episodes to get used to, but I did love it and looking forward to more. Hopefully they don't keep us waiting too long.

I’ll have to start that next. I need shows to watch while stuck on the couch nursing after DD1 goes to bed! :)

Have fun! I won't post you any spoilers, but be sure to message me and let me know what you think.
