Well i was exclusively breastfeeding but my LO has been a nightmare for the past 2 weeks and wont settle after his feeds so ive introduced formula.
He was refusing the bottle at first but with a bit of patience he took a good feed 2nite and has settled so well.
Its the first time ive had a "milk drunk" baby!!! He went straight down in his cot and i havent heard a peep since.

He was really fussing at the boob and ended up getting soo worked up that he wouldnt sleep, instead of relaxing during his feed like he should of been.

Anyway im planning on keeping him on the breast at night....purely because i know i would miss the closeness, and admittedly because im too lazy to go downstairs to make up bottles in the middle of the night haha!!

Just looking for tips from other combi feeders on how to go about doing it properly??
Without getting mastitis etc??

Hi,

I've done the same thing as you, although slightly later...

My LO was getting a bit fussy and I've suffered with sore nipples and 3 lots of thrush.. it's just not the pleasant experience I wanted it to be any more!

But.. I did want to try to continue BF a bit for the closeness and ease!

So I've introduced formula during the day and she is sooooo much more settled and goes longer between feeds.

She was sleeping through the night anyway so I have continued to BF her when she goes to bed (cosy feed) and when she wakes up in the morning (lazy feed)! And then she has 3 bottles during the day.

My HV told me the best way to do it was to start dropping the later feeds (evenings) as this is when your supply is lowest so it's not as much of a shock to the boobies! Then work backwards throughout the day until you get to the morning feed. She said that introducing another bottle every 5-7 days should give your boobs a chance to adjust without too much problem.

In my experience, my boobs didn't seem to notice I was dropping feeds so I did it quicker, and had gone down to 2 feeds a day, (from about 6-7 feeds) in less than 2 weeks! Think my supply may have been low to start with...

Sorry to ramble, but wanted to share my experience of it!

Hope it's of some help.... Good luck!

Thank you so much. That really helps!!

Although that means ive still got a few weeks of hell haha!!
Was being a tad naive thinking it could happen sooner.

this is very interesting as i've noticed my lo getting really fussy on the boob lately. i introduced an evening feed recently and it's the only time i've ever seen her 'milk drunk' as well. in two months i'm going back to work so i have to ff then so my intention was to always slowly change over but i was hoping to keep morning and evenings feeds as bf - it's tricky to know how to do this when dropping the evening feed during the process.

sometimes i think some babies just prefer the bottle. i've battled through thrush and poor latching initially but after 4 months it's still a bit of a battle at feeds. i'm seriously considering changing over to ff this month instead of next. at least if i do it very slowly i shouldn't notice too much of a difference in the boobs. fingers crossed.

i feel a bit sad about leaving the boob but needs must and if lo is happy; seems silly to hang on.
