A meibomian cyst, or chalazion, is caused by an infection in one or more of the little glands attached directly to the base of the eyelash. These point inwards to open onto the conjunctiva, and they are less common than styes that usually point outwards and discharge their contents onto the lashes.
Although uncomfortable, meibomian cysts are not dangerous; they will usually resolve with hot bathing and topical antibiotic ointments such as fuscidic acid or chlortetracycline
