Your midwife is wrong and whats happening is totally normal!
I agree with all the other advice, stop the top ups and feed as often as possible. In the early days they do feed an awful lot, Lyra used to only go an hour between feeds at most in the beginning, but it does get better.
Look for a breastfeeding group in your area for some support and maybe invest in a sling or wrap baby carrier so you can feed with your hands free xxx
