They've been all plain white apart from the control line before today... does this mean I'm on my way to ovulating (I'm CD12 today) or is it meaningless until I get a darker / dark as line???

Based on the color of your lines, I'd say another 3 or 4 days. Good luck!

I did what you've done and lined all mine up in a book - then my positive OPK was easy to spot! Keep testing! Good luck!
