I know everyone swears by clarks, and that is what im looking at, but ew, they arent very nice to look at!

anyway more to the point, what kind of shoes are best for first walking shoes?

We did Clarks, but then I discovered Robeez and I like them better. They are not as cute as Clarks though, but I care more about his foot development than I do about how they look.

We do barefoot/sock feet the most though!

I really dont like clarks, i dont think they are nice at all, i agree though i care more about how they will help him walk and not how they look, but they do have to be nice too.
i saw some lovely Converse canvas pumps in Clinkards and i was going to get him them, but idk if im wrong, i figured if they are soft around the ankles that wont be so helpful? OHs gran was going to buy him some Flossys (pumps, like Toms) but again, are they better having support around the foot not just on the sole? or have i just made that up?

I really like the look of clarks, lol! Even their "Cruisers" felt too "shoe like" for me though, too supportive.

Converse have very inflexible soles. They are better having as little support as possible. The human body does not need support in order to function, if you start babies off with "support" their muscles and bones will not grow to function as correctly as they would if they were left barefoot. Think of women who wore corsets for years and years and their muscles do not properly support their body as they did unsupported. As close to barefoot is the best you can get. The point of shoes is to protect the soles of the feet from scratches and damage, and weather (hot pavement, cold weather, rain, etc) while allowing the foot to properly flex and grip the ground as necessary for development.

What about something like this? They look a bit more supportive and less flat footed then converse but a bit cuter than Clarkes. They've got loads on schuh.

that makes so much sense, why didnt i think of it like that. i think my best bet is to take him into Clinkards and ask their opinion

i think the reason i dont like Clarks is because i dont like clothes or shoes with like dinosaurs, rockets, cars etc. on them, if its not mickey mouse then im sorry but NO :haha:
im really not as bad as i sound there lol, M does own some clothes with them designs on them :haha:

That must be a UK store, never heard of them!

Oh yes, I avoid the ones with characters on them too. Every one I've gotten has been a plain leather shoe. I wonder if the selection is different in the UK? I know some have characters on them here, but its only about half the selection.

I've had this one: https://www.clarksusa.com/us/boys/boys-shoes/Softly-Seb-First-Navy-Combi-Lea/p/26101314 and several similar ones that are not for sale anymore.

I would say go with whatever shoe you like that is sold by a reputable children's shoe store that has employees who actually know how to measure and fit children's shoes. The brand doesn't matter as much as the expertise of the person doing the fitting. Personally, I do like Clarks and that's mostly always what we've bought, just because locally, they have the best store with the most knowledgeable employees. There is another children's shoe store in our nearby town, but I felt they didn't really know what they were doing when we went in there. We've bought Startrite and Clarks and I personally think Clarks hold up a bit better (Startrite shoes, especially for the really little ones, I think tend to be kinda ugly but that's just me). I don't ever just buy shoes off the rack at a non-specialty store and I'm really careful about how they fit and don't feel confident fitting them myself. We only ever have one pair of shoes at a time though (plus a pair of wellies), until she outgrows them and we get the next pair, so I pick something that matches most things, and that's what makes Clark's affordable. Otherwise, they are kinda pricey.

We used stride right. I'm in US, everyone I know swears by them

i agree, and this is why i wont go to a clarks shop for fitting or advice, the one close to me is rubbish, i have known a few people who have gone and the employee has fitted wrong, one of them is my OH cousin, she has something wrong with her feet anyway and her mum explained this to the employee who reassured her he knows exactly what hes doing and he is trained in this, so off they went with what they believe was correctly fitted shoes, within the next few week they noticed her walking getting worse, they then went to Charles Clinkards for a second opinion and they measured her feet totally wrong and this has now caused more problems for her feet.

i think my best bet is going to the shop with M getting him measured, and let him try shoes on that the employee suggests

My LO's first pair of shoes were Clark's ... since then he's only had Geox shoes they're a lot better quality in my opinion, they really last. He only has one pair of shoes at a time and this is his current pair

Some of the Start-Rite shoes are also nice
