Dear Graeme

I am appealing against your decision to decline my application for flexible working on the following grounds:

Burden of additional costs:

You have stated that to allow me to work part time would be a burden of additonal costs but I am struggling to understand how this may be the case. I have requested to now work 16-24hrs per week so there would be less wages paid out. Also, I am aware that Jennifer was employed to cover me being on maternity leave with the view of possibly being kept on so I am sure she would rather have part time work that have no job at all. I do not feel that by me doing part time hours would mean that any member of staff would be required to work additional hours as Jennifer is positioned in my role at present anyway.

Detrimental effect on ability to meet customer demands:

I do not feel by me doing 2-3 days would have a detrimental affect on customer demands as within the office there is always a steady flow of work and I do not feel there is a particular day of the week that is any busier than another and I did state in my request that I would be as flexible as need be from week to week with regards to my working days.

Inability to reorganise work among existing staff:

When I began in Blue Square it was statutory that we be trained in all aspects of our roles and so all receptionists/administrators have the exact same training and knowledge of the role and so we could all complete each others jobs if need be. As far as I am aware no members of staff have been asked if they would mind different tasks on days where i would not be working so feel there is no grounds to use this reason if other staff members have not been approached at all.

Inability to recruit additional staff:

I know that, on the occasions where Blue Square has recruited staff, there have been a high volume of qualified applicants. I feel there would be no problem in recruiting additional staff and as already stated Jennifer was taken on to cover my maternity leave therefore Jennifer could be offered the days in which i would not be working when i return.

I would like to state that I am very commited to returning to work and ideally would like to continue my employment with Blue Square as I enjoy my job very much but as it stands at present, I am unable to return full time and as previously stated I am open to any compromise you may have to enable me to return to work.

Yours sincerely,

That letters fine hun...hopefully the idiots won't have a case now!! xx

I agree, the letter is fine. Hope it gets you the hours you want:thumbup:

hey hun, letter sounds fine (though i'll admit i don't know much about this side of things). Perhaps if you want to double check it and ask if there's anymore areas you can use to support your case you might want to go on the Acas website and contact them (they're a free support to help parents with work rights)

Looks fine to me - From what I can see they have basically just lumped every reason required in law to decline you...It shows that they haven't really taken the time to properly consider your application - If in doubt chuck it all in.... a typical family unfriendly approach to mothers with children.

Have you thought about asking for a trial period, of say 3 months, for you to try it out and prove that you can do the job in the hours you want? it would be really unreasonable for them to turn that request down and at least it will give you chance to look at the market and see whether there are any other suitable part time jobs around?

Tbh think he just wants rid of me now, doesnt want the inconvenience of an employee who is a parent ( all the other girls have no children) so dont think anything will work but just want to try lol. Thanks for all the advice. Kx

Hi,
Jus happened 2 see ur thead.
I made a request at my place of work for flexi hours, i asked them if i could still do 40 hours but jus change the hours n they said no because they were cutting our hours, so i asked them for 30 hours they eventually said yes. I started bac in feb this year (20 weeks pregnant with my second LO) When i was 30 weeks they made me redundant the b*****ds. Think they jus wanted 2 get rid of me tho.
They have 2 have a REALLY good BUSINESS reason why they can't accept ur request.

Good luck hope it all works out 4 u

Yeah, but its what is denoted as REALLY good. My work sayno to flexible working as you are working with different regions around the globe and so have to be able to be contacted. Yet the engineers in those regions seem to pick ad chose when they work - which actually makes my job harder as they place an order, then fuck off for weeks on end or never rply to communications, then complain when an item is late because we cant do what they want!
