For or against animal testing?

Like the title says.

I don't agree with animal testing but then I don't know how we would test medications which can save a humans life!? We eat meat and wear by products of animals so im not too sure how I feel about this one!

I'm against it. I'm not a meat eater either.

Against it. There are plenty of pedos, rapists and murders to test stuff out on sitting about in prison.

Edit: before anyone else gets up about this it was a joke I seen it on a facebook page.

Heres one for use chavs instead.

True, never thought of that actually. People sitting on death row for years and years and years!

I'm not against it in the case of drugs and when it's necessary ie they've done all the research they can but can't go any further without testing. I would think that it's not acceptable to use people on death row to test things. You can't just torture people. I remember thinking that would be a good idea when I was very young but it's just not right. You can't just say you broke the rules so now you have no rights. I think that we would all lose our humanity if we started treating people that way

If you see testing as torture, then why should it be okay to do it to animals?!

It can end up being torture yes. I know that humans are animals too but to me humans are more important than animals.I know people will argue with this but think about how upset you would be if you saw a dead bird on the road versus seeing a dead person that had been run over. I would rather have 2 mice die while testing for something than 2 people. Anyway you couldn't really use people on death row on most of these situations as animals are easily reproduced and brought to the condition necessary to the trial. Like alot of trials would require young animals, would we want to do trials on children? Penicillin, insulin, the polio vaccine, chemotherapy for childhood leukemia, hip replacement and heart bypass surgeries were brought about using animal testing. The breast cancer drug Herceptin was developed using mice. So were most of the drugs and procedures that won nobel prizes. What are you meant to do with drugs. would you just give them to people and hope for the best? what sick people would try them out while they are still at a probably dangerous stage?
I don't believe in animal testing for cosmetic products. It's easy to use products that are natural so already known not to be harmful

wasn't meant to be serious I seen it on a facebook group and thought it was amusing.

Now, that I like!

Um, no, I am not for it...at least not for things like cosmetics etc. For drugs, yes, I guess I can see that...for ones that are necessary anyways. But, I think it should be done in the most humane way possible. I don't think they should use the same animal over and over again for testing. That animals whole life would be testing, and that is just super unfair.

I am a vegetarian (mostly) who kind of went a little crazy while pregnant with my baby (who is now born). I craved red meat with her, and gave in because I was anemic too and figured I needed it. I do feel really badly about it though. I am not totally back to vegetarian, but heading there (it's hard on my hubby because I make him too). My kids don't eat animals, and we have NO leather. Ewww. I am a member of PETA and I know people will say that people from PETA are crazy, and true...just like anything else, there are a few fanatics, but most are normal and not all are even vegetarians...and like it or not, PETA has made some wonderful changes in this world, and opens people's eyes to what is REALLY happening with animals out there.

I would prefer animal testing not to happen, but I think in some circumstances it is unavoidable and can save lives. I do think the animals tested on should be kept in as good conditions, treated as humanely as possible and allowed to exhibit some natural behaviours.

I do think where possaible testing should occur on human, paid volunteers and I don't believe it should occur on prisoners against their will, whatever their crimes.

ffs it was a joke! the prisoner thing. Some people dont read all posts.

I agree with animal testing for medical purposes. It is vital to know that medications are safe and at the end of the day animals are not as important as humans. I don't agree with animal testing for cosmetic reasons as it simply isn't necessary.

I dont like it but what other option do we have? Do we test it on humans instead, if so what would be the critera? Even though DF said it as a joke, would a paedo or murderer be a worthy subject? I dont think there is a more humane way than is done now with regard to the animals?

I live near to Glaxo Smith Kline and that is an awful, eerie place to go to, the security is ridiuculous, its just not a nice feeling going into somewhere knowing they have hundreds of animals having god knows what done to them :(

Yeah I can imagine it must be horrible to live near to somewhere like that!
I do think medications should be tested on animals, but not cosmetics, at all! I dont really think its justified.

:dohh: I made my posts before you made the edit  there are some people who really believe that though, I've had it said to me before and that's why I didn't take it as a joke

Maybe if people on death row could volunteer...? Not that I can see that happening. Just a thought though.

i agree with medical reasons but cosmetic i dont agree with at all. X

100% against.

Scientifically, testing products meant for humans on animals is unreliable and potentially dangerous. Animals react differently to humans to many substances, rendering many tests pointless. For example, a contraceptive called Tamoxifen was once developed which was tested on rats. It worked as intended, and was given to humans. However, it had the opposite effect on women, actually increasing their fertility!

There are many other examples, some of which had much more harmful consequences. You may remember Thalidomide, a drug given to pregnant women to prevent morning sickness. It had been tested on animals and declared safe for humans, but it caused severe deformities in many of the babies born after their mothers had taken it. A couple of years ago a drug called TGN1412 was tested on some human volunteers, and very nearly killed them - they were on life support for some time, and were left with permanent health problems. Prior to being given to these people, this drug had already been tested on monkeys at a dose 500 times stronger than that which was given to the humans, without causing the monkeys any ill effects. Aspirin causes birth defects in cats. Penicillin kills guinea pigs. 6-azauridine, a cancer drug which can be used in humans for long periods, will kill dogs in a few days in even small doses. The list goes on.

I don't believe in exploiting animals for any reason.

In the uk cosmetic testing on animals is illegal. For medicine it is very difficult. I don't think we are more important than animals but I do want good modern medicine. The more 'advanced' the animal the more dubious I am about their use but then the less like us the animal the less relevant the results probably are. A good example of this is using the fruit fly as a model organism for genetic research. This is widely done however flies happen to be particularly weirdly evolved in a totally different way to us meaning they have very different genes fulfilling comparable functions.

Fortunately in the UK we have very strict regulation over animal testing. Any vertebrate research requires a licence. Working on chimps and the likes has to go through millions of hoops including ethical committee review of the methods and outcomes. This is not the case in many other countries and there is certainly an argument it's better done here as humanely as possible than elsewhere with little or no regulation.

My declared interests - I am a vegetarian and have carried out animal research. This was removing brains from live worms in order to collect RNA. It was horrible and a good part of why I quit research. I could never work on anything 'bigger' for sure.
