I'm sorry if this is an insensitive question but I just wondered if there was a medical reason for miscarrying more than once or twice or if it was extreme bad luck?

Hi, i've just had my 4th mc, my doctors going to be do my referral to see a gynecologist on monday. The question that you have asked is something that i have been wondering about myself. My doctors have always put my mc's down to 'a case of bad luck' and thats in their own words.

Good question Susan.

I had my 2nd about 8 weeks ago - I had the first in January this year.

Alot of doctors, including my own doctor, say many miscarriages are due to chromosomal problems or just bad luck. Not sure what bad luck actually means.

However, this is the 2nd with my OH and whilst he was married to his ex, she experienced many miscarriages but went on to have healthy children. This makes me wonder?

In my family, both my mum and elder sister have had miscarriages and my maternal great grandmother had a series of them. Not sure if miscarriages are genetic?

I am 37 so could be a case of 'old' eggs.

Alot of women even with testing, unfortunately, never find out.

Sadly miscarriage is very common, so docs not keen to investigate until you have had 3. I have had 9, but also 4 children. Hubby has a condition that affects some of the chromosomes in some of his sperm. If we get an unaffected sperm then we have as much chance as anyone else of having a viable pregnancy. Good luck to you all in 2009

I have had three in a row, and they have called it "recurrent m/c" and the reason they say I am probably m/c is a combo of reasons, including low progesterone. I am also wondering if I have a polyp which mught not show up on an HSG 9it was clear). I have done some research, and apparently polyps can cause early m/c, and not show on an HSG. I am going to ask for more investigations if I happen to have another m/c.

I think the term 'bad luck' can be very unfortunate and hurtful when you are experiencing the recurrent heartache of the magnitude that a mc is.

After 2 this year i have been told i will get bloodtesting in the new year. They could find something (like blood clotting probs etc) or they could find nothing. There's only a 50/50 chance of getting some answers. They do not perform genetic testing for couples with less than 3 mc's. Having said that the actual percentage of genetics being the reason for recurrent mc's is very very low, some places quoted as low as 3% of couples ttc with reccurent mc's.

I try to be pragmatic and although in the future more research might show there are specific reasons why some of us do have recurrent mc's it is also a fact that, statistically, i have every chance to carry a baby to term next time. And i think that's why its called 'bad luck'....and i figure if i keep on trying i will 'luck out' in the end!

my dr always says 2 is classed as normal... dunno why.
