I may get a bit of stick for this post, as pre making bottles is looked on to be really terrible! But after speaking to my health visitor (the only nice one ive had) and her saying that she made up all her bottles, knows loads of people who do it, and its fine, i changed my mind about making up bottles.

This is how i make my babys bottles at the moment; (for a 4oz feed)
- boil the kettle and sterilize bottles.
- put 2oz boiled water into the bottles and leave on the side to cool to room temperature.
- put the remaining hot water in a thermal flask.
- measure out 4oz powder into a storage pot.
When LO wants a feed i just sterilize a separate bottle, put 2oz boiling water in the bottle and add the powder, swirl and then add the 2oz cooled boiled water in with the hot water, swirl again and its the right temperature for LO.

However the health visitor told me it was absolutely fine to make up the bottles completely, put in the fridge and there fine for up to 24 hours. The reason for this is you have a sterile bottle, sterile powder from the hot water, everythings sterile untill you take the lid off, so once the lids on no bacteria can go into the bottle to cause it to multiply. Bit confused as everyone has different ways of doing it so just wondering everyones methods! :)

For my first two this is what I did.

Boiled kettle and then left to cool in the bottles at the right measure.

Say 4oz,once cooled in then added 4oz of powder and shake well, once totally cooled I would then store in the fridge but only for 24 hours tho.

I would always make a while days worth of bottles.

My two are now 10 and 6 and If I fed this baby with formula I will do the same.

This is what i mean, so many people do it, and i think some of the rules now are a little over the top! So did you feed you LO's the bottles straight out of the fridge or did you warm them up? :) x

I used to completely pre make 12 hours worth. I would make the bottles with boiling water and mix well with the powder, I would then put them in a bowl of ice cold water and put the bowl and bottles in the fridge straight away. I did it this way as otherwise I would forget about them. I found this worked fine but sometimes when reheated they would smell funny so I ended up doing as you have said and for a 4 oz bottle I would mix 4 scoops of powder with 2oz boiling water, mix well then add 2oz of fridge cold pre boiled water for an instant bottle which in my opinion was fresher than the total pre make. Once LO got to 6 months we switched to ready made as I was fed up of the faffing about.

Do you have to cool them quickly or can they be left to cool to room temperature, and then be put in the fridge? quick cooling sounds like a much better idea! Yea it is a lot of faffing about, even doing it what i can the easy way! at the moment hes having ready made so may be an option to just keep him on that and cut out the powder all together!

i make up all the bottles ive got, about 7 and leave in fridge and just warm up as required.

when made i leave them out for about an hour to cool then put in the fridge. x

Hi
I make 3 bottles in the morning and 4 in the evening for our LO.

We have a milton steraliser which is really handy as items stay sterile for 24 hours (I just couldnt get on with our steam steraliser)

I make bottles like this
Boil the kettle (fresh water everytime)
Wait for kettle to cool (about 15 mins) and pour water into each bottle to the required ammount (currently 5oz)
I then add the powder (5 scoops)
I then shake/swirl the bottles really well and put in fridge.
Heat in our bottle warmer as and when required.

I know were supposed to make each feed fresh but its just not practical, this is the way my mum and all my friends do their bottles.

xx

I'm so glad i've found this thread. I plan on using formula but worried about having to mess with the bottles everytime before I feed baby..

I'll keep an eye on here for more tips :flower:

It's possible that I'm wrong here, but I'm pretty sure you should put them right in the frig once the formula is mixed with the water. I know once it's mixed it's supposed to be either used (drank by baby) within one hour or refrigerated and if not used within one hour it's supposed to be discarded according to the formula's instructions. If it's different if the water is really hot I'm not sure, but I don't think it's a problem to put them right in the frig hot. Like I said, I could be wrong, but that's what I always knew so just wanted to let you know since it caught my attention when you said you leave them out for an hour. :flower:

I used to warm them up first x

i used to make them with boiling water and cool down on demand but it was horrid seeing dom scream waiting for them to cool down, my HV said the same too and my mother did it with all 3 of her kids. I only make doms daily feeds (4 bottles worth) so make them up with slightly cooled but still pretty hot kettle water (about 15mins) then rapid cool in a bowl of cold water with ice cubes then once cool whack in the fridge and use them in the day doms never had an issue with it :) HTHS!! :flower:
