Hi mommies,

I am a FTM to an 8 day old baby girl and have some questions:

1. My baby spits up more often than not. Most of the time it's very little but sometimes it seems she spits up everything she took in. My question is should I nurse her again after a big spit up ? She just did so again but was still very cranky after words so I nursed her and she latched on .. So I assume she was hungry again. Is this ok to do?

2. She has been very random last two days .. Sometimes she wants a feeding every hour or sometimes 3 hours later. Sometimes she feeds for 10 mins other times 3 minutes. When she does these little feeds of 3 minutes, is it ok for me to nurse from the same side next time or should I switch every feed?

3. I burp after every feed, but she still sometimes spits up in her crib. I'm terrified of her choking .. What more can I do to make sure she is ok before I put her down ?

Thank you in advance !!

1. If she wants to nurse, let her! They don't usually over nurse. I would bring the spit up up at her next appointment though

2. The randomness is normal, try to switch boobs every feed or you'll get uncomfortable

3. Try not to lay her down for at least 30 minutes after nursing, this should help that!

Spit up is totally normal. Even the occasional full feed is typical as long as it doesn't happen every time. When mine used to do this, I would usually feed her again if she wanted to. Burping throughout a feed or when switching breasts can help, as when an air bubble gets trapped it can bring up everything on top when it comes out.

Just feed on demand and offer, offer, offer. Your baby knows what to do. As she hits growth spurts or mental leaps she will change her nursing styles over and over again. Don't worry about it. Since she takes some big feeds and some little ones, it implies that she knows how to regulate her intake to match her own need. After a little feed, I would offer that breast again the next time to make sure it gets emptied and she gets the full varying quality of the milk.

I worried about choking so much too! But she never did, even when she was sick lying down. It tended to 'jump' out of her mouth rather than stay in, leaving her messy but perfectly ok. Healthy babies have a very good protective reflex and will gag, cough and splutter to protect their airway - if you see this happen, she ISN'T choking. In fact, she is doing exactly what she should. You could elevate the end of her crib a little though, if you wanted to, so she isn't completely flat.

We use a baby monitor with a sensor pad under the mattress which sounds an alarm if she stops breathing. This totally saved my life and helped me to sleep during the early days, and I still like to have it on now, out of habit more than anything.

BF babies feed on demand and most often a lot more than formula fed babies for the first month or more. If she spits up and doesn't cry like she's still hungry then stop. If she is still wanting to eat or wants to eat a half hour later, have at it. BF babies that young unfortunately dont have a schedule. Just keep her happy, thats all.
