Hi ladies, Until 21 weeks, I had only gained 9lbs, but now, all of the sudden, I'm up 13lbs.

Has anyone else experienced a sudden surge in weight gain like this? Do you think it has to do with a growth spurt? (By the way, I haven't really changed my eating habits lately). I'm just really hoping to gain less weight this time around, and thought I was doing so well, but now I'm afraid I'll end up gaining 40lbs again like the last two times. :(

I experienced 3.5 lbs in 24 hours (I had already gained 22 lbs by week 26).

Yes, 24 hours. Within three days, it decreased to a 1.5 lbs gain for the week.

For me, it was water retention combined (hopefully) with a growth spurt since my eating and activity patterns have been constant. I noticed a lot of swelling in my belly and lower legs.

Considering you've only gain 9 lbs so far, you are probably not going to gain 40 lbs. Especially if you haven't fallen into eating an extra 1000+ calories a day ^_^

With me its a bit different and I'm also worried. I was 57kg(125lb) before pregnancy and by 16wks I had gained 6kg(13lb) so I was on 63kg(138lb) and that's where it stoped until today. My weight hasn't changed since then and its making me a bit worried. My diet is still the same, I haven't changed anything and I'm on my 26th week ):

Well, the 9lbs was before the 4lbs this past week, but I know 13lbs is still not bad. It's just that I gained 40lbs with my first, and then tried hard not to with my second, but somehow still ended up gaining 40lbs again. So I'm just worried that this sudden weight gain means it's all going to catch up now. :( Thank you for your encouragement though. :)

I think if baby is still growing, you're probably fine. Maybe your body just wanted to stock up early, especially since it sounds like you were pretty skinny pre-pregnancy. :flower:

I only gained about 11lbs with my dd but I had her at 30 weeks so I don't know how much I would have gained by the end. With dd, pre-pregnancy weight was 160, ended at 171. I had terrible nausea in my first tri and ended up losing 5 lbs or so, so technically once I could eat again I did gain a total 16 lbs or so.

This time, pre-pregnancy weight was about 147 and right now at 162. I lost weight after having my first so I started out less which was great, but... I've already gained 15lbs with this pregnancy and I'm only 27 weeks. I wouldn't say I had a surge in weight gain, but the last 2 or so weeks I've put on the last 5 lbs which the rest of the time I was gaining maybe 1/2 pound a week.

I've never been one to care too much, I don't *think* I look like I've gained much as far as like in my face or other areas than my belly, but then again I don't have like a before and after to compare. But I've brought it upon myself. I've been eating very badly. I mean not typically gorging myself at meals but I have been having desserts and treats after every meal, ice cream, brownies, candy bars, more ice cream... I can't help it! This little boy is making me live with all the wives tales about what being pregnant with a girl! More weight gain, cravings for sweets, acne, dry itchy skin... bleh.

Either way. I just want to enjoy this pregnancy as much as possible since it will be my last, but I also don't want to get so big that I have a really hard time losing it after the baby. I think a surge in weight gain is normal once we get to this stage, the baby alone triples in weight from the end of the second tri to the end of the third so I assume it is normal! I hope! LOL

I've been weighing myself every week at about the same time in the morning just for my own curiosity. One week I gained 3 lbs, that's a record for me so far, but my total monthly weight gain was still only 4 lbs because one week I lost a lb, the next I gained 2 and after that my weight was the same as it was the previous week. I'm not eating more or less than I usually would, with my second I gained 40 lbs too and like you I don't want to gain that much this time around.

I experienced almost 4 lb gain in under 2 weeks between 18 - 20. At my 20 week scan, baby was measuring 21 weeks, so I'm assuming the weight gain was a growth spurt. I've gone back to 1 lb a week after that and barely gained 1 lb last week and this week.

I think 40lbs is a decent overall gain actually! I gained around 60 with my second daughter.. To be honest I stopped counting towards the end

I gained 3lbs in this past week, so you're definitely not alone. My total is already up to 24lbs though.. Eek :(

Thanks, ladies. It's nice to know that I'm not alone. I weigh myself every day, and these past couple days I just kept thinking, "This scale must be broken!" :haha: :dohh:

I'm in the same EXACT boat as you. In fact, our due dates are even just days apart. Up until this week, I had only gained 11 lbs total. This morning, I weighed myself and I'm up 3 more lbs from when I weighed myself a week ago.

WTF  I'm hoping this is just an off week.

Well, on a lot of the threads where women are worried about not feeling as much movement, I've heard ladies say that babies tend to go through a growth spurt sometime between 22-26 weeks which is why they're a little quieter, so lets hope that's what's accounting for our weight gain this week!

I am 25 weeks and I have gained 23 pounds so far. At my last doctors appointment I was told I am only allowed to gain a pound a week from now on, which really seems inpossible to me..I was told that I need to gain a total of 25-35 pounds for the entire pregnancy. I have been very lazy and not exercising and I have a desk job so that doesn't help. But once my doctor said I need to slow down on the eating and exercise it got me concerned. So now I do 30 min elliptical at moderate intensity and I log all my food so I can keep track of what in eating. It turns out it's a lot more than I thought.
Does anyone know how many calories a day we are supposed to eat? According to myfitnesspal and my current weight being 153 lb, I can eat 1750 to maintain my weight. I ate 2250 yesterday and burned about 250 working out.. And I was having to restrain myself from eating more. My appetite is increasing and that doesn't make things any easier.

It seems like I hear 350-450 additional calories a day as the norm, but more or less depending on pre-pregnancy weight. I understand how you feel. I eat more than I should, but I also only eat when I'm hungry most of the time. I guess for me it's what I eat when I'm hungry that's not so great. I rarely eat fruits and vegetables, which is my biggest problem.

But good for you for exercising every day! I've never been great at exercising, :dohh: and even now, I just count on my 1 year old and 2 year old to keep me moving around throughout the day.

My midwife finally mentioned something about my weight gain. It's not too far off the mark, but she recommended cutting down on the sugars since they'll go straight to the baby. :dohh:

But it's so hard not to have ice cream after dinner! ...And lunch! :haha::dohh: We should get "freebie" pounds as pregnant women, like 20lbs that we can just blow on junk food that will automatically come off when we give birth. :winkwink:

I am having such a hard time not eating ice cream after dinner.. I think this is what brought on the large weight gain. I would eat healthy throughout the day and then I go home and ruin everything with dinner and desert. On top of that I sit at a desk all day and when I go home I don't have any other kids to keep me busy so I watch tv or read a book.. Which goes well with snacking :) but I am really going to change this. So far 2 days it's going well.

Prior to pregnancy, I had started to cut down on added sugars. I did fairly well first trimester on avoiding sugar because I just didn't want it. Reliance on potatoes and crackers unfortunately contribute to excess weight gain.

Second trimester my sweet tooth returned in full force. I even went back to my favorite dessert treat, toaster over s'mores. I've also been eating more chocolate.

The fear of pre-programing Lil' Miss Bean to my sweet tooth and increasing her weight has got me rethinking my sweet indulgences. :nope: So back to trying to limit added sugars. I should get my 1 hour glucose test results back latter today. Fingers crossed that it's normal.

Good luck with the results. :hugs:

My results should be ready tomorrow, but they won't call me u less it's abnormal. So I am hoping I don't hear anything back.

I hope everything comes back normal! My doctor's office won't call either, but we have an online system where we can check the results of any tests that they do, so I'll usually check that.
