Is it really that odd?

I was considering Ruby for a girl but it's soooo popular right now and I don't want a name that's really popular (I was one of loads of Samantha's at school) so I started thinking of other gem names

I really like Garnet and it's also the birthstone for January but I made the mistake of asking a couple of friends :dohh: and they weren't impressed :(

I thought it was unusual but pretty

I can't be the only one who likes it can I? Am I totally mad?

I dont like it im sorry :nope:, sounds very harsh, and reminds me of Alf Garnet. xx

Sorry I dont like it either, I agree it sounds too harsh

xx

What a lovely idea! Garnet is my favourite precious stone: it was what they used to make the Sutton Hoo Treasure. It's certainly unusual: there's a little Ruby at Rowan's nursery, and I've come across several others including a Ruby-Tuesday (poor child), but I've never met a little Garnet.

Sorry I'm not a fan. It sounds a bit masculine to me. Also I would worry it might be shortened to Gary which would sound a bit odd on a little girl.

I don't like it either I'm afraid...does sound a little masculine to me..sorry :(

dont forget other precious gems hun. garnet does sound a bit harsh and until children get older i dont think they will realise what it means so would tease somone with the name garnet.
if its the precious gem route you want to go theres names like jasmine, saphire, or even jewel.

the way i choose names is i think about whether or not they could get teased about it and whether or not theres a possibilty there could be more than one of them in class, i to love the name ruby but didnt choose it as i want my children to be known for their name and not their surname or be known as a name with a number.
children wouldnt understand the name garnet until they were older and knew what it was so it is an easy target for teasing and bullying.
at the end of the day hun its your choice and if you like it then its your desicion but that is the way i go about choosing names. xx

Hmmmm maybe as a middle name then? I still like it but I hadn't thought about shortening it lol

Thanks for all your replies anyway, plenty of time to find the perfect name yet thank goodness - and it could be a boy!

I dont really like it, But at the end of the day its you and your OHs choice :) x

I love garnets but as a girl name..really unfortunately it does sound too masculine (also the spelling is too close for me to Garret) but there are so many other lovely precious stone names...I absolutely love Sapphira (I would use it in a heartbeat if I could..lol) and also Beryl - or how about Gemma? That also means "gemstone" and I love, love, love it (DH hates it sadly) - it's very feminine and not overly popular..

I agree, not very pretty & feminine...

But as you said... plenty of time to find the perfect name!

Some other ideas along those lines (& some nice ones already suggested!)...

Opal
Pearl
Sapphire
Jewel
Violet
Gemma
Amber
Saige
Winter
Hazel
Noelle (Christmas baby!)
Ruby

ooh! I like it! Its different! It makes me think of somebody quite sophisticated & good looking?!

As a primary school teacher, i found that younger kids dont realise which names are unusual. eg if theres 1 Sophie in their class, and 1 Garnet in their class, they would see the two names as equally unusual. Its when they get to secondary school they start to notice! lol! Hopefully by that time, the child would b confident enough with their own name to not let it bother them? (easier said than done, i know!)

I know one of my mums friends husband is called Garnet so no I don't think its right for a girl

I really like it.
I think there is a Jacqueline Wilson book about twins called Ruby and Garnet that my sister was reading, and I've liked it since then.

I LOVE the name Garnet, but I've always seen it as a masculine version of Ruby. Though girls get boy names all the time now. But I think more feminine (and red) gems would Beryl and Coral. I don't care for Coral but I like Beryl. There's also Jasper, but, like Garnet, I think of it as a boy name.
