Lo was prescribed infant gaviscon today.

The GP was very specific to me saying the gaviscon comes in sachets which are two doses and I should only give lo half a sachet per feed.

When I got the gaviscon it comes in a box of thirty doses. The sachets are in twos but individually wrapped iyswim. Each sachet clearly says ONE dose and the box says for babies under 4.5kg use one sachet in at least 115mld of formula.

So I'm thinking I add one of the packets to her bottle (she is having 150mls at a time). I'm assuming the GP is confused in how the gaviscon is presented as for a larger baby, the box would contain 15 doses which is what he told me it contained.

Dd is 9lb so under the 4.5kg limit.

Hi, my lo was prescribed gaviscon yesterday she is 9lb 13oz and is also having 150mls we are tearing the 2 small sachets apart and using one and saving the other for later...i thinks thats one dose, maybe thats what he means by half a sachet? Hope u get on ok :) x x x

One half of the double sachet is one dose (so one sachet is one dose and they come in twos). Your doctor should have advised you what concentration to use but I have found GPs not very knowledgable with Gaviscon. When my little one left hospital he was having 1 sachet to every 100mls of milk. His reflux was not getting any better and when we saw the consultant she said to mix it with anything from 90mls to 120mls, as we are still having problems I was told it I could use one dose to 80mls of milk. I currently use one dose in 90mls as I find any more milk and the gaviscon doesn't work as well. It gets fiddly when your little one has larger amounts of milk, if I do bigger bottles I tend to make them up in a couple of bottles to get the right concentration and split them down. 1 sachet in 150mls might not be thick enough to do any good but 2 would be too much so maybe make up 180ml bottles with 2 sachets???

Gaviscon is prescribed as 15 doses but it is in fact 30 (it confused me the first time I picked up a prescription - I thought they had given me too much). I would double check with someone for clarifiation on the concentration of gaviscon to milk though just to be on the safe side. x

One dose is one sachet. So you'll be using one of the two adjoining sachets per feed.

One sachet should be mixed into no less than 115ml formula....this is not for the thickness but for the water to sodium ratio, any less and you risk giving your baby too much sodium for their kidneys to handle.

If this is not working satisfactorily for your Los reflux, you may have to try an additional medication. We had to go onto ranitidine, and it's been miraculous for us.
