Hi All,

I had an ultrasound today at right around 6 weeks. My yolk sac and embryo measured right on track for 6 weeks, but my gestational sac was measuring closer to 5 weeks. I wish I could remember by measurements, but I was too overwhelmed to take it all in. I have another ultrasound scheduled for next week, but I was wondering how to interpret all of this. How great a concern is it that the sac isn't measuring equal to the embryo?

I believe it's actually not as big an issue as I thought when I had it happen to me! The sac was much smaller than should have been but there was a baby there! Somehow; I got it in my head to drink loads. A scan two weeks later showed everything was back on track.

She's now a grown up 5 year old!

At the time I had never heard a story like it but I've heard loads since then, here on the forum.

Update: I am attaching a photo of my ultrasound. Apparently the white area surrounding the black dot (embryo) is supposed to be larger.

A small sac can be a sign that things are not advancing as they should, but it is not a definite sign. Lots of times the sac will catch up with the baby. It is considered small when the difference between the mean gestational sac size and fetal pole crown to rump length is less than 5mm on ultrasound.

Thanks for the reply. It has taken us two years to get to this point and we have already lost one embryo. I am so desperate for good news, but it feels like we will never be out of the woods. I wish I could remember the disparity between the embryo and the gestational sac, but I can't. Should know more on Thursday.

Hi hun I think you may be slightly confused the black circle is your gestational sac and when you look within that sac you can just about see a fuzzy white bit which is the embryo. Looking at your scan pic I would say it looks fairly normal for the stage you are at. Hopefully by your next scan the sac will have caught up. x

OMG, you are totally right. Haha. I feel stupid, but they really did tell me that the sac was measuring small. Heartbeat, etc all right on target.

In my defense, I wasn't watching during the ultrasound because I was so nervous.

Hi Knobby,

I got my measurements from my doc via email and it sounds like the mean gestational sac size is just under 5 mm greater than the crown-rump length, so I fall into the "small" category. Any idea what that actually means?

This site is made for ultrasound techs (see last bullet point under the second section)

It says it is suspicious but not diagnostic. Many do end up catching up with the baby and there is no problem, so I wouldn't put lots of energy into stressing over it. Also if the ultrasound tech was 1mm off on one of their measurements it could make a huge diference this early on, especially if you fall just under 5mm.

What did your dr say? Does he/she want a repeat scan?

Thanks for getting back with me so quickly. I am an anxious mess over here.

My doctor (reproductive endocrinologist) actually performed the scan. She didn't seem too concerned initially but did ask me to come in later this week for a follow-up scan. I freaked myself out when she sent me my measurements because I have found a couple of studies linking <5 mm of difference with a high rate of miscarriage. We already lost one baby and are so nervous. Thursday can't come soon enough...
